Reviews: Sample Editors for the Ensoniq Mirage
The Ensoniq Mirage was the first affordable sampler for the home musician and hobbyist.
The operations are done by the Mirage and the wavesamples must be recalled to the ST to view the edited results.
This was the first Mirage sample editor released for the ST. It works with all ST models and monitors, and uses a hardware key protection scheme that lets you copy and install the program on a hard drive.

Capable of (limited) multi-sampling, the Ensoniq Mirage was something of a miracle (at the time) offering affordable sampling for around $2,000.
As well as being a few hundred bucks less than the Mirage, it was a dream to use even for complete novices.
That said, the Mirage's lo-fi sound quality was/is not without appeal and a collection of drum, percussion and other samples have been generously donated by Italian musician Aphrologique of Club Silencio.

Seriously though, this is the story of two Ensoniq Mirage keyboards that belonged to me. One worked perfectly fine, the other had a bad chip and couldn't read the keyboard properly anymore.
Unfortunately the motherboard of the keyboard Mirage models is too damned big to fit in a rackmount case.
So I took apart the fully functional Mirage and used parts of it to fix the then fully dead Mirage so that it could at least be played live from the keyboard this way I can at least use it as a live instrument.

Ensoniq was founded in 1982 by Commodore engineers Robert “Bob” Yannes (designer of the SID audio chip of the Commodore 64 home computer), Bruce Crockett, and Al Charpentier.
Ensoniq products were highly professional; strong selling points were ease-of-use and their characteristic “fat”, rich sound (generally thought of as being an “American” quality, as opposed to the “Japanese” sound which was more “digital” and somewhat “cold”).
Ensoniq was known not only for their innovative musical instruments division, but also for their computer audio chips.

To this day, you can't help but be impressed at what the Ensoniq people had accomplished: they had created a product that offered up the very latest digital sampling technology at a shockingly affordable price.
And while the Mirage was only an 8-bit instrument with 128K of memory, it was a worldwide sensation.

Ensoniq hasn't ever given an explaination for it (personally, I don't know why it's so hard for them to admit defects in their machines), but it seems to be a function of the slider/reader.
I also find myself with multiple keyboards, all of which have sequencers (well, the Mirage doesn't have much of a sequencer and the ESQ is sick in the closet).
in the ensoniq samplers there is a set of parameters called the "tuning table" that defines what pitch each key will play (normally this is set to "standard") but the machine lets you define your own table.

Originally, Kevin Saunderson's sampling duties were handled by an Ensoniq Mirage.
The distinctively grainy 8-bit sound of the Mirage was a feature on many Detroit records of the time (most famously, perhaps, the Mirage provided the string stabs on Rhythim Is Rhythim's definitive 'Strings of Life') and provided a characteristically metallic edge on some of Saunderson's early classics.
The Ensoniq was superceded by a Roland S-550 which lasted until Kevin bought his first Akai sampler, an S900.

One of the main beauties of the Mirage's filters is that they essentially turn it into a pseudo-hybrid digital / analog synth - ie., if you've got some sort of basic synth wave-form sample, the Mirage can kinda replicate the synth it came from, or create entirely new synth patches.
Really, the Mirage is useful more as a sample player than as an actual sampler - don't get me wrong, it'll sample and do a reasonable job of it, but with the very limited memory you haven't got much to play around with, which means lots of frustrating re-sampling to get it right.
This is a reasonably common problem with the Mirage (I've had 3 blown!!) - you play along merrily, and notice that some of the notes are not sounding.
