  Ents - Tolkien Gateway
Ents were created at the request of Yavanna to guard the trees, and thus were called "Shepherds of the Trees".
Ents were envisioned as Shepherds of the Trees, to protect the forests from Orcs, Dwarves and other perils.
Almost nothing is known of the early history of the Ents — they apparently lived in and protected the large forests of Middle-earth in previous ages, and they briefly appear near the end of the First Age, attacking a band of Dwarves, apparently summoned by Beren and LĂșthien.

Ents - The Lord of the Rings Wiki - A Wikia wiki
The Ent Quickbeam was regarded as a very "hasty" Ent for answering a question before another Ent had finished: the end may only have been another hour away.
In this meaning of the word, Ents are one of the staples of fantasy and folklore/mythology, alongside wizards, knights, princesses, and dragons, although modern English-speakers would probably not call them by their traditional name.
Somewhat akin to Ents are the Ancients portrayed in the Warcraft universe.

 Treebeard
The Ents were created from the thought of Yavanna, the Vala of growing things, to protect her beloved trees.
It is not known exactly when the Ents came into being, but it may have been around the time of or shortly after the awakening of the Elves, which occurred around 1050 of the Years of the Trees.
The Ents and Entwives had already begun to grow apart - the Ents were interested in the wild woods, while the Entwives preferred tending orchards and gardens - and after the Entwives moved away, the Ents seldom saw them.

Ent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this sense of the word, Ents are probably the most ubiquitous of all creatures in fantasy and folklore, perhaps second only to dragons.
Although the Ents were sentient beings at the time of their awakening, they did not know how to speak until the Elves taught them.
Tolkien later noted that the destruction of Isengard by the Ents was based on his disappointment in Macbeth; when "Birnham Wood be come to Dunsinane", Tolkien was less than thrilled that it amounted to men walking on stage with leaves in their hats.
