Entasis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In architecture, entasis is a design technique used to counteract a certain optical illusion.
When a column or other structure is designed with parallel sides, the sides appear to have a slight inward curve.
Entasis is the inclusion of a slight outward curve in the sides - making them not parallel - to counteract this optical effect.

 Entasis Architecture
Entasis Architecture has been retained to develop master plans for some of the most significant development areas in Bermuda, important in terms of architectural heritage, cultural and historical reference, and commercial, political and social impact.
In addition to master planning for commercial projects we have acted as consultants to many of the existing hotel operations in Bermuda on the expansion of their resort facilities and have participated in master planning and feasibility studies for new resort development in Bermuda and overseas.
Entasis Architecture has engaged sub-consultants, joint ventured with other designers and specialists and worked as the architect of record with overseas architects.

Flagpole Taper Types - Cone tapered vs. Entasis Tapered   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
It is this true Venetian Entasis taper that gives the flagpole its fullness, its "body" and its richness in appearance, but this entasis taper, to be truly Venetian, must be delineated according to the mathematical contour developed by the early Venetian craftsmen.
The configuration of the genuine Venetian entasis taper is definitely calculated.
It is built on "entasis stations" at equal vertical intervals in the tapered portion of the flagpole.

One of these tricks is called entasis, the bulge in the stylobate (foundation on which the columns stand).
Proof of entasis is that the Parthenon fails the "hat test": a hat left on one end of the stylobate cannot be seen from the other end if you crouch down and view it from ground level.
The entasis of the Parthenon's stylobate is clearly visible in this close-up.

 Entasis Revisited - Architecture Forum
Furthermore, it is given credence as an actual phenomenon; entasis seems accepted as a method of subliminally influencing the eye of the observer so that, for example, the parallel sides of columns do not seem to narrow at their middles...
But this raises a question: it would seem that the same architect who appreciates the subtleties of ancient building, and even accepts the theory of subliminal corrections and its application in ancient work, rejects this in modern design.

Anyone can see the entasis by simply looking, but it is essential to experience it in a quite different way by the active feeling of the column in strong sweeping eye movements.
Then you experience the dynamics of the column as it under-pins the heavy lintel and furthermore you experience this in the dynamics of your own body, in swell of lifter muscles and power of back and thigh.
Such a pilaster is still very closely related to sheer wall, but when they have gathered their sides into entasis they show themselves as fledglings nearly ready to transform into columns.

 Classical Columns
A crucial part of the modeling of the classical column is its entasis, the subtle curvature that causes the column to swell at the bottom, as if to express the load that it is bearing.
The lack of entasis on extruded aluminum “columns” is why they look so lifeless in place.
The Ionic column, being the slenderest of the classical columns, is thought to be the most feminine, with the sensuous curves of the Ionic volute being a highly stylized representation of flowing hair.

As mentioned before, entasis is the slight convex curvature of a classical column that diminishes in diameter as it rises.
Entasis, as used by Greek builders, was of extreme subtlety.
The freehand curvature was merely sufficient to guard the contours of the column from any appearance of inward sagging.

The ionic pilasters look particularly swollen, like burgeoning pea pods!
Now, it IS a Classical Revival building, but it looks like the ancient practice of entasis went a bit overboard, here.
After all, it was developed to correct the visual illusion of the column appearing *thinner* in the middle section, and meant to result in an appearance of a straight and true column.
