Enterocolitis Necrotizante / Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Necrotizing enterocolitis develops in 2,000 to 4,000 newborns annually, and affects 1% to 8% of all newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units in the United States.
While there appears to be no single cause of necrotizing enterocolitis, research has identified a number of risk factors, including prematurity, hypoxic injury (injury caused by a decrease in oxygen supply to body tissue), maternal drug use, and early feedings in premature babies with an immature gut.
The management of necrotizing enterocolitis depends on the severity of the disease, the infant's response to medical treatment and the degree of bowel involvement.

Necrotizing enterocolitis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Necrotizing enterocolitis is a serious bacterial infection in the intestine, primarily of sick or premature newborn infants.
Early symptoms of necrotizing enterocolitis include an intolerance to formula, distended and tender abdomen, vomiting, and blood (visible or not) in the stool.
Sometimes necrotizing enterocolitis occurs in clusters, or outbreaks, in hospital newborn (neonatal) units.

AllRefer Health - Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
Necrotizing enterocolitis is an acquired disease, primarily in premature infants or sick newborns, in which intestinal tissue dies.
In necrotizing enterocolitis, the lining of the intestinal wall dies and the tissue sloughs off.
The cause for this disorder is unknown, but it is thought that a decreased blood flow to the bowel keeps the bowel from producing the normal protective mucus.

THE MERCK MANUAL--SECOND HOME EDITION, Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Ch. 264, Problems in Newborns
Necrotizing enterocolitis is injury to the inner surface of the intestine.
Diminished blood flow to the intestine in a sick premature newborn may result in injury to the inner layers of the intestine, allowing bacteria that normally exist within the intestine to invade the damaged intestinal wall.
The diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis is confirmed by abdominal x-rays.

Enterocolitis induced in infants by cow's milk and/or soy protein has been recognized for decades.
There are increasing reports of additional causal foods, prolonged clinical courses, and onset outside of early infancy, leading to description of a food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome.
The purpose of this report is to delineate the characteristic clinical features and review the possible pathophysiologic basis to frame a rational strategy toward management.

Probable neutropenic enterocolitis in patients with AIDS.
Neutropenic enterocolitis is well documented in patients with leukemia or lymphoma who are recovering from the adverse effects of chemotherapy.
Both of our patients manifested a mild form of enterocolitis that was characterized by fever, abdominal pain, and evidence of colonic edema easily recognized by computed tomography of the abdomen.
Neutropenic enterocolitis should be considered as a treatable cause of fever and abdominal pain in patients with AIDS.

Neonatal necrotising enterocolitis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Background: Necrotising enterocolitis is a serious gastrointestinal disease seen principally in neonatal intensive care units.
From this data and crude estimates of the proportion of premature babies who receive no breast milk in neonatal care, it has been estimated that 500 cases of necrotising enterocolitis in Britain each year could be attributed to exclusive formula feeding.
Disease severity was reduced in those fed predominately or exclusively on ‘man milk; and we found evidence in support of the hypothesis that human feeding is associated with the most marked benefits at 30 weeks gestation or above, in whom mortality from NEC was substantially reduced in predominately human milk-fed infants.

Clostridium spp have been incriminated as a cause of enterocolitis in horses and foals and appear to be part of a complex disease process.
The clinical enterocolitis syndrome due to clostridial infection has been best characterized in foals but appears to occur in adult horses as well.
Isolation of clostridial organisms requires anaerobic conditions and, depending on the organism, special growth media; thus, the laboratory should be alerted that clostridial enterocolitis is a differential diagnosis for the case.
