Topic: Enterprise taxonomy

Taxonomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taxonomy (from Greek verb tassein = "to classify" and nomos = law, science, cf "economy") was once only the science of classifying living organisms (alpha taxonomy), but later the word was applied in a wider sense, and may also refer to either a classification of things, or the principles underlying the classification.
Anthropologists have observed that taxonomies are generally embedded in local cultural and social systems, and serve various social functions.
Such taxonomies as those analyzed by Durkheim and Lévi-Strauss are sometimes called folk taxonomies to distinguish them from scientific taxonomies that claim to be disembedded from social relations and thus objective and universal.

Corporate taxonomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taxonomies can cover virtually any type of physical or conceptual entities (products, processes, knowledge fields, human groups, etc.) at any level of granularity.
Corporate taxonomies are increasingly used in information systems (particularly content management and knowledge management systems), as a way to allow instant access to the right information within exponentially growing volumes of data in learning organizations.
As an extension of traditional thesauri and classifications used in a company, a corporate taxonomy is usually the fruit of a large harmonization effort involving most departments of the organization.

Implementing enterprise taxonomies with WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Enterprise taxonomies created at IBM are used in general keyword search, advanced search using predefined parameters, and directory-structure searches for internal and external Web sites.
The taxonomy may need to represent the enterprise at different levels for different purposes, and different levels of granularity may be necessary at different portions of the taxonomy.
For an enterprise taxonomy to be fully useful, it typically must permit documents to be classified into it (that is, assigned a category from the taxonomy) with high accuracy.

Earley & Associates How to Develop Enterprise Taxonomies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
In an enterprise, they are used in a variety of contexts to organize information so that it is easier to retrieve depending on the role of a user and the tasks they are executing.
The taxonomy itself is not the answer to information retrieval – the information is! The importance of a comprehensive and well-constructed taxonomy is that it provides a framework for defining perspective and building effective navigation in a body of information.
Taxonomies are derived from user terminology, either expressed in the terms they use to search for information, or by the way authors write about information.

HUMAN MACHINE INTERACTION BREAKOUT GROUP REPORT
Taxonomies are a common classification mechanism and have been used as a means to establish common glossaries for the successful communication of concepts and ideas amongst multi-disciplinary groups involved in the design of CIM systems (Camarinha-Matos et al., 1995).
The ability to associate the activities with human factors would be a major application of the taxonomy, as this will provide a framework for the consideration of the human factors during the allocation of tasks in an enterprise.
An advantage of a taxonomy of human factors would be the availability and accessibility of an explicit medium by which the human aspects of an enterprise can be understood and communicated in an unambiguous manner.

Taxonomy - Although a taxonomy can be defined simply as the content directory for an enterprise's unstructured information, it can be populated with content and presented to the user in many different ways.
A taxonomy is analogous to a folder structure, with the additional functional components of metadata for document classification as well as the rules for categorization.
Most enterprise portals have a taxonomy for this purpose, as well as some may have automatically generated taxonomies generated based upon the metadata provided.

 Integrating enterprise and specialized taxonomies
Last month, I discussed the separation of the search and browse taxonomies in Microsoft’s distributed intranet environment (see "Two taxonomies are better than one ").
The advantage of that separation was in the divorce of local navigation from enterprise-wide information retrieval, which allowed sub-portal owners to build their own set of site categories, while still taking advantage of a centralized search service utilizing common search vocabularies.
One of the key requirements of this service was that any code changes should be invisible to the sub-portals using the search service, since we didn’t have resources to run a traditional versioned software application requiring reinstalls when new releases were made.
