In the early 90s, Entombed paved the way for the Swedish death metal scene and death metal itself with their crushing debut 'Left Hand Path' followed quickly by 'Clandestine'.
As groundbreaking as those albums were, however, the band significantly expanded their audience as the result of the overwhelming response to 'Wolverine Blues'.
He always double booked and bands got put aside and there was a lot of hassle and his mixing table broke down and he had to fix it first.

Entombed - Biography - AOL Music
Still, whether or not fans chose to accept the band's continual evolution, there was little denying Entombed's role as an inventive and pioneering band operating in a notoriously close-minded genre.
Before the Swedish group was Entombed, group members Alex Hellid (guitar) and Nicke Andersson (drums) anchored the band Nihilist, with L.G. Petrov (vocals) and Uffe Cederlund (guitar) in and out of the band for a period of two years.
Ironically, just as Entombed had been crowned as the kings of death metal, these two releases in 1993 found them blatantly moving away from death metal's traditional conventions; their riffs were noticeably slowed down, the vocals were actually coherent, and the song structures were simplified into verse-chorus-verse arrangements.

Providing inspiration to multitudes of bands the world over, Entombed were the first out of the gates with the highly distorted, crunchy and brutal sound, which was defined as the sound of death metal from Sweden.
Much dissatisfied with Earache, the band resolved at this point to leave the label and it was a couple of years before things were all right contractually and the band found itself with new management (previously managed by a Morbid Angel road manager) and new label Music For Nations.
Entombed, which recently reminded us how good it once was by releasing a disc of early demos, has gone from the forerunners of the metal nation to a quasi-rock band of sorts reminiscent of Danzig and Metallica with its roots and talent nowhere in sight.

Entombed have once again put out a solid--if a bit mediocre--metal record with Morning Star.
In fact, the band's sound on Morning Star includes a noticeable Slayer influence in both the vocal and music departments.
In the end, Entombed's Morning Star is neither among the best or worst of metal--it is just a decent record that is consistently brutal, but not as extreme or distinctive as some of the band's previous work.

Of these, the death metal take on Kiss ' "God of Thunder" from the Out of Hand EP is an interesting comparison to the original, though the song loses its appeal after a few listens.
By the time Entombed parted ways with Earache, it had recorded three very different full-length albums with different vocalists and different approaches -- so since this album focuses on a myriad of random B-sides, it fails to document the group's growth well at all, which a successful retrospective album probably should.
Nothing here predates Clandestine, which is unfortunate since the Left Hand Path era was a golden era for the band, particularly since the band moved so quickly away from that sound.

Back in 2002, much respected-metal veterans Entombed (the dudes who'd given us classic '90s albums like Wolverine Blues and Left Hand Path) played as the pit orchestra for some kinda fuckin' ballet.

Entombed were one of the first death metal bands in the world to reach major success and their early albums were unique and groundbreaking, introducing the world to a new sound that would leave its mark into our days.
You can still trace the old Entombed sound in this recording and the raw primal vocals are still there as well but they have now developed their sound not to make a u-turn in the musical evolution of the band.
Even though the band has more or less ripped off Rage Against The Machine with their track "The Itch" this is a very good album and it's nice to see that the band has the guts to explore new territories without leaving their roots completely behind.

 PyroMusic.net - Review of: Entombed - Clandestine
With the American scene losing some of its impetus at the start of the 1990s thanks to the proliferation of bad hair bands and a flood of generic thrash acts, smaller, less exposed markets were beginning to come to the notice of metal enthusiasts.
Out of Stockholm came Entombed, a band that had existed (as Nihilist) since 1987 and one that was making a truly brutal and ugly style of death metal, a style that would quickly become de rigueur for other emerging bands from that region.
For those more used to the band's later groove death and punk-edged stylings, the sludgy, horror-movie character and sheer brutality of this album may come as something of a shock, but few could argue that this is a benchmark by which all other death metal to follow would be measured.

Samuli was the main composer of the band's lyrics for the two years he took part of IneartheD, but in 1995 his family moved to the USA and there was no way for him to continue in the band.
For the band to be able to sign with Spinefarm Records, they were forced to change their name, since the contract with the Belgian label had already been signed under the name of IneartheD.
The band wrote eight new songs for this album, and while on the studio decided to include an extra track, which was hastly composed and whose lyrics were improvised by Alexi; that track would eventually receive the name of ''Kissing the Shadows''.

Many fans disowned the band upon this release, and I have to agree, it is major step away from Clandestine.
One has to wonder also how much of the problem was the band's signing to Sony Records, and what effect they had on the final sound of the album.
Evidently Entombed decided to release the album under their own label to ensure artistic integrity, (what DID happen on Wolverine Blues???) evidently for good reason, To Ride is ten times better than their previous venture.

They're a metal band, but they refuse to follow a clear, cut-and-dried path that would make them easy to shove into a certain genre.
Entombed, despite releasing several albums over the years (many of which I've downloaded from E-Music, and plan on reviewing here soon), might be one of the best-kept secrets in metal.
I can't say for sure if Uprising is the best place for newcomers to start exploring Entombed, but as long as they're willing to invest some time with this disc and allow themselves to grow into the adventure Entombed wants to take them on, it's not a bad first choice.

Entombed's "Inferno" is one of those albums that exists in the gray area between rock and death metal.
