 Polyzoa - LoveToKnow 1911
Hatschek (1888) treated the Entoprocta as a division of his group Scolecida, characterized by the possession of a primary body-cavity and of protonephridia; while he placed the Ectoprocta, with the Phoronida and Brachiopoda, in a distinct group, the Tentaculata.
In the Entoprocta the tentacles are withdrawn by being infolded into the "vestibule," a depression of the oral surface which can be closed by a sphincter muscle.
The development of the Ectoprocta is intelligible on the hypothesis that the Entoprocta form the starting-point of the series.

In other Entoprocta the buds on a horseshoe retain a high degree of individuality, a shaped lo p h o - thread-like stolon giving off the cylindrical phore; stalks, each of which dilates at its end i, Ectocyst; into the body of a zooid.
In the Entoprocta the tentacles are withdrawn by being infolded into the " vestibule," a depression of the oral surface which can be closed by a sphincter muscle.
The development of the Ectoprocta is intelligible on the hypo-thesis that the Entoprocta form the starting-point of the series.' On the view that the Phylactolaemata are nearly related to Phoronis (see PHORONIDEA), it is extremely difficult to draw any conclusions with regard to the significance of the facts of development.

 The Goblet Worms (Phylum Entoprocta)
In some text books the Entoprocta are called Kamptozoa (Nodding animals), in other texts, particularly older ones, they are described as being part of the Bryozoa.
The Entoprocta were originally included in the Bryozoa, however scientists later decided that they deserved to be in a phylum of their own.
They are distinguished on the basis of the position of the anus in relationship to the lophophore or ring of tentacles.

Entoprocta The Entoprocta are also known as the "goblet worms." There are approximately 150 described species that occur in coastal marine habitats.
Entoprocta are primarily sedentary and are either colonial or solitary.
Entoprocta are attached to the substrate by a pedicel or stalk, and the largest portion of their body is contained in a calyx at the upper end of the stalk.

Entoprocta and Rotifera are both phyla in the subkingdom Pseudocoelomata, while the phylum Ectoprocta is currently classified in the subkingdom Proterostomata (Holt, 2000).
Holt (2000) states that the main difference between the Entoprocta and Ectoprocta lies in the loss of the mesentaries in the coelomic cavity.
The Entoprocts have spiral cleavage and the Ectoprocts divide by radial cleavage (Meglitsch and Schram, 1991).

The second includes the Entoprocta, the third is made up of the Ectoprocta, and the fourth is made up of the Proterostomes.
Hickman (1973) states that Ectoprocta and Entoprocta are two groups that have been classified in the phylum Bryzoa.
One explanation for this separation is the true coelom of Ectoprocta versus the pseudocoelom of Entoprocta (Hickman 1973, Holt, 2000).

The 4 phyla (Phoronida, Brachiopoda, Bryozoa, and Entoprocta- have long had uncertain phylogenetic relationships to other animal phyla and to each other.
The first three have 1 major anatomical feature that may be homologous- the lophophore.
The Entoprocta contains about 150 species, which are all benthic, solitary or colonial animals restricted to marine environments.

 Natural History Collections: Lophophorate Coelomates
Four phyla, the Bryozoa, Entoprocta, Phoronida and Brachiopoda, possess a tentaculate, food catching organ called a lophophore.
Although often grouped together the four phyla may not be closely related: the Bryozoa and Entoprocta appear close to the protostome line of evolution; the Phoronida and Brachiopoda to the deuterostome line.
Their common features may result from a sessile way of life and be due in part to convergent evolution.

Cycliophora is a new phylum with affinities to Entoprocta and Ectoprocta
The structure and function of the cilia suggest a phylogenetic position in Protostomia, while some aspects of inner budding and brooding of larvae are similar to those of Entoprocta and Ectoprocta.
The dispersive larva possesses a mesodermal supporting chordoid structure, otherwise absent in protostomian larvae.
We believe that all the above features of this previously undescribed species warrant the recognition of a new phylum with affinities to Ectoprocta and Entoprocta.

The freshwater lophophorate species do not form a monophyletic unit, but comprise two separate phyla, the Ectoprocta (Bryozoa) and the Entoprocta (Entoprocta).
Resemblance with the Ectoprocta is only superficial, while entoprocts may also be mistaken for hydroids.
Within the Entoprocta, the anus is situated on the circular lophophore (originally the ventral surface of the free-living larva), and a simple protonephridial system is present.
