ENTREZ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
ENTREZ is a service of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) which is a part of the US National Library of Medicine.
But ENTREZ is much more than a database, it is a both a powerful search engine and a pre-computed list of relationships between all data elements.
The entire ENTREZ database was distributed on CD-ROM from 1992 until August, 1996, but this was discontinued due to the huge size of the database (which filled 6 CD's by 1996) and the impossible task of keeping the CDs current with the rapidly growing database.

NLM Technical Bulletin, March-April 2005, Gene Indexing and Entrez Gene
The basic principles of gene indexing have not changed with Entrez Gene: indexers create annotated links between records in Entrez Gene and PubMed®'s MEDLINE citations in which the basic biology of a gene or protein is the main focus of the article.
Because of the improved searching capabilities of Entrez Gene over LocusLink, indexers are able to narrow their retrieval and locate Entrez Gene records more easily and more efficiently.
In PubMed citations, users may click on "Links" and then select "Gene" from the pull-down menu (see Figure 1) to view the Entrez Gene record for the gene or protein to which the article was linked.
