Everyone will soon have access to detailed information on the cleanliness and quality of their local environment, Environment Secretary, Margaret Beckett, announced at a meeting with council leaders today.

The Mail on Sunday claimed Sunday it has access to a letter written by environment secretary David Miliband to chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown, which has detailed proposals on the tax measures with an idea to change the attitude of people towards environment and make those who pollute the environment pay dearly.
Miliband has urged Gordon to impose additional taxes to curb car use and ownership and a steep increase in road tax, saying market-based instruments, including taxes, need to play a substantial role.
