ION Storm Blasts Into the Realm of Environmental Audio
By utilizing Creative's cutting-edge Environmental Audio technology, ION Storm's sound design team was able to add intense levels of game play with special effects that generate a new kind of audio excitement in fierce and dramatic combat scenes.
Environmental Audio goes beyond 3D positional audio -- sounds will appear to come from all corners of a room or space adding reverb, echo and other effects consistent with the room acoustics, position of the player, source of the sound, and many other cues.
Developers are using Creative's Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX) application programmer's interface (API) to develop for this new audio standard.

Environmental audio extensions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The environmental audio extensions (or EAX) are a number of digital signal processing presets for audio, present in Creative Labs later Sound Blaster sound cards and the Creative NOMAD/Creative Zen product lines.
The effects engine, actually an E-mu 8011 DSP integrated into the audio chip, was historically used to enhance MIDI output by adding effects (such as reverb and chorus) to the sampled instruments on sample-based synthesis cards (also known as wavetable).
EAX is a library of extensions to Microsoft's DirectSound3D API, adding environmental audio presets to DS3D's audio positioning.

The Environmental Audio Extensions developer's kit was successfully launched at Creative's annual developer's conference, Creativity '98, in Silicon Valley and London, England, and at the Computer Game Developer's Conference earlier this month.
Environmental Audio goes beyond just positioning 3D audio around the user to actually modeling environments in real time that can include special effects such as reverb, echo, room size, underwater effects and much more.
Based on E-mu Systems' patented audio technologies, the EMU10K1 is the first audio processor capable of 1,000 MIPS of raw processing power with the capability of channeling many and varied audio sources while adding special effects like reverb, echo, acoustic properties, doppler and much more in real time.

The underlying issue common to all 3D sound cards is that of positional audio, which refers to adjusting features such as reverberation; balance; and apparent sound "location" to produce the illusion of sound coming from in front of, beside, or even behind the user.
One very important element in positional audio is HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function), which refers to how the shape of the ear and the angle of the listener's head changes the perception of sound.
Creative Labs' Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX) has become the de facto standard for 3D audio since the demise of Aureal's A3D in mid-2000.

In addition to sporting audio inputs and outputs, Creative's Sound Blaster cards (and most other brands of consumer soundcards) have a built-in chip that automatically plays MIDI music whenever you encounter it on the Web, in video games or elsewhere.
Some are fairly simple, offering a few audio inputs and outputs, while others include built-in digital multi-track mixers and effects processors.
USB units have the advantage of being plug-and-play, and since all USB based units are external, the audio converters can be kept a safe distance from the noise inducing insides of your computer.
