	Envoi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		In poetry, an envoi is a short stanza at the end of a poem used either to address an imagined or actual person or to comment on the preceding body of the poem.
		The envoi is relatively fluid in form, depending on the overall form of the poem and the needs and wishes of the poet.
		Since the 14th century, the envoi has been seen as an integral part of a number of traditional poetic forms, including, in addition to the ballade and chant royal, the virelai nouveau and the sestina.

		In the five years preceding the composition of Envoi, I lost a number of dear friends — Stephen Albert, William Schuman, Andrzej Panufnik, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein, for example — and they were memorialized in a variety of scores I composed between 1990 and 1995.
		Obviously, our word "envoy" is related to it, but it also implies concepts ranging from the conclusion of a book or other work of art (or perhaps a life) to the "sending out" of something, much as a space probe is sent out to explore the cosmos.
		In planning Envoi, I recalled that those whose deaths I have witnessed (including my mother) did not struggle but rather, in effect, seemed to slowly recede from life, much as a ship sails ever more far away until it disappears over the horizon.

		Envoi exudes a strong sense of individuality and, if the letters and comments page is anything to go by, seems to provoke a sense of familiarity and loyalty in its readership.
		Envoi's own competition is invaluable as it provides an overview of submissions and quite lengthy critiques of the winning poems (together with the opportunity for readers to offer their views).
		Envoi is also a good mid-road journal to recommend to first-time or would-be poets, as I have so done from time to time.

		ENVOI is one of the leading poetry presses in the country so it goes without saying that any issue will be eagerly awaited and just as eagerly pored over by its subscribers and other recipients.
		ENVOI is a long-running, self-funding publication and reading through issue 144 makes me rather sorry that I haven't read it before.
		ENVOI would make a useful addition to any bookshelf as a standard to aim for in the case of would-be poets, or as a finger on the pulse for those who wish to follow contemporary work.
