Topic: Eoraptor

In the News (Sat 26 Dec 09)

  Introduction to Eoraptor
This was Eoraptor lunensis, a medium-sized carnivore found in the Ischigualasto Formation of northwestern Argentina.
Eoraptor lacks the specialized features of any of the major groups of dinosaurs, and is quite similar to what would be expected for dinosaur ancestors.
This has led some to conclude that it is not part of the dinosaurs proper, but is a closely related archosaur.

Eoraptor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eoraptor was one of the world's earliest dinosaurs.
Eoraptor belonged to a major group of dinosaurs called saurischians, or lizard-hipped dinosaurs.
Eoraptor is more ancient than even the Herrerasaurus, and only some prosauropods recently discovered in Madagascar are older.

 Eoraptor- Enchanted Learning Software
Eoraptor (pronounced EE-oh-RAP-tor) is one of the earliest known dinosaurs.
Eoraptor was a small, lightly-built dinosaur that walked on two long legs.
Eoraptor was a saurischian ("lizard-hipped") dinosaur, a very primitive theropod, and a member of the infraorder Herrerasauria (which includes Herrerasaurus, Staurikosaurus, Saltopus, and other very early dinosaurs).

Digimorph - Eoraptor lunensis (primitive dinosaur)
Eoraptor lunensis is from the late Triassic of Argentina.
One of the earliest known dinosaurs and a contemporary of Herrerasaurus, its already bipedal stance and short, specialized forelimbs suggest an affinity with theropod dinosaurs.
Eoraptor lends support to the hypothesis that dinosaurs diverged rapidly and at small body sizes from a common ancestor, and that the main herbivorous and carnivorous lineages were already present by the Middle Carnian.

Eoraptor means "dawn thief." It was found by Ricardo Martinez in 1991; in the Ischigualasto Badlands of Argentina.
Eoraptor was found near the same site from which Herrerasaurus, another very early theropod, was found.
Eoraptor was named by Paul Sereno in 1993.

Eoraptor lunensis is roughly the same age as Herrerasaurus - 232 million years old - yet it already shows specialized features which indicate that it lies several branches up from the base of the dinosaurian family tree.
Although giant theropods like Tyrannosaurus went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous time period, the avian branch of the theropod family tree flew unscathed through whatever it was that caused the extinction of its larger cousins 66 million years ago.
By CT scanning Eoraptor, we hope to learn more about the exact relationship among these earliest members of the avian family tree.

Herrerasaurus is the older of the two, but Eoraptor is younger by only a split geological second.

Scientists are not quite sure if Eoraptor was a very early dinosaur, or simply so closely related to the first dinosaurs that they are hard to tell apart.
At any rate, Eoraptor gives a very good idea of how the first dinosaurs looked.

A possible basal dinosaur, described as more derived than Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus (but interestingly, in the description all are considered basal to true dinosaurs), it is based on an ilium (with partially-perforated acetabulum and two sacrals), with maxilla, astragalus, humerus, and teeth referred to it.
Another odd character is the backshifting of the pubis, similar to, but not to the same extent, as that seen in ornithischians, dromaeosaurids, therizinosaurians, and birds.
Unlike Eoraptor, it has three sacrals (or at least the mount I've seen of seems to, so this could be in error; so, if you insist that it has two, I'm not going to argue).

 What is a dinosaur?
For example, consider the case of Eoraptor, often considered the earliest dinosaur.
We are not certain where Eoraptor branched off from the line that led to advanced theropods: at point A, B or C.
So it's possible for Eoraptor to be non-dinosaurian or a basal saurischian, but not a basal dinosaur - neither saurischian nor ornithischian.

New dinosaurs appear to be oldest yet, as reported in the 22 October issue of Science

The new dinosaurs were prosauropods, herbivores with small heads and long necks that could walk on two or four legs.

Theropoda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the late Triassic, a number of primitive proto-theropod and theropod dinosaurs existed and evolved alongside each other.
The earliest and most primitive of the carnivorous dinosaurs are Eoraptor of Argentina, and the Herrerasaurs known so far from the early late Triassic (Late Carnian to Early Norian) of North and South America (and possibly also India and Southern Africa), and characterised by a mosaic of primitive and advanced features.
Experts disagree over whether these animals are basal theropods, basal saurischians, or prior-to the saurischian-ornithischian split.
