 Ludoteka. Epaminondas
Epaminondas was invented by Robert Abbott and published by him privately in 1975.
Epaminondas is played on a 14 x 12 board with 28 fl pieces and 28 white pieces.
In this case, the enemy piece is captured together with all pieces in the phalanx to which it belongs, extending back in the direction of movement of the moving phalanx.

 Under the Strategy Tree
Even though games are as old as any art form (in fact, it makes more sense to say that art is a game form than that games are an art form), games are not generally accepted as worthy of critical study (except maybe as simulations or mathematical models).
It is a useful idea for a game inventor to keep in mind during the development of a game, and it is useful in the criticism of games.
Epaminondas is clear because the magnitude and direction of the forces are shown by the size and direction of the phalanxes.

There are still some interesting competition games that we have not written about yet, and maybe we will be able to return to these at a later date.
It turned out that limiting the games to an 8x8 board was very restrictive—a number of competition entries, I think, may have been better if the inventors had been free to select a different board size.
In a few cases, I know, a game that originally had been designed for a different board size was squeezed into the 8x8 format.

Epaminondas first attempted to intercept the Athenian contingent before it could join their Spartan allies, but failed when these troops were moved by sea.
Epaminondas allowed the Spartan army to join their Mantinean allies so he could pounce on Sparta itself; but a deserter alerted Agesilaus to his plight and he countermarched back to the city.

Epaminondas (game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Epaminondas is an abstract strategy board game invented by Robert Abbott and originally introduced in Sid Sackson's A Gamut of Games as Crossings.
It is named after the Theban general Epaminondas, known for the use of phalanx strategy in combat, and the concept of the phalanx is integral to the game.
To keep the game from ending in a draw due to copycat moves, there is an additional rule: no player may move a piece onto their opponent's home row if that move creates a pattern of left-to-right symmetry on the board.

 Epaminondas Summary
Epaminondas (410-362 BC) was a Theban general and statesman who overthrew Sparta and whose original battle tactics revolutionized ancient warfare.
Trained in Pythagorean philosophy, Epaminondas was said to be unselfish, devout, and generous, and he certainly had a more intellectual approach to war and politics than most Thebans.
Epaminondas lost favor and was serving in the ranks in 367, when a crisis again raised him to a position of command.

 Game Systems - Part 4
Game systems (sets of components that function together in multiple games, such as decks of cards) are probably almost as old as games themselves.
The game ends when both Werewolves are killed, in which case, the Villagers have won, or when the number of remaining Werewolves equals the number of remaining Villagers, including the Seer, in which case, the Werewolves have won.
These games are challenging; my playtesters and I were unable to solve the first puzzle (turn the rhombus of six pennies into a hexagon) in less than five moves, although the authors state there are no less than 24 ways to do it in three moves.

 Great Battles of History: Epaminondas
This module, published in C3i magazine, issue #7 covers battles of the innovative Theban leader Epaminondas, during the brief period of Theban supremacy between the Peloponnesian War and Philip II's conquest of Greece.
Neither battle is particularly well balanced, but they are quick-playing and you can't argue with the price (the module is available on-line).
Suggestion for game balance: remove the three Theban LCs.

Since I had pretty much worked out a new game, I thought I should give it a new name, so I called it “Epaminondas.” This was a really stupid (and pretentious) move on my part and it’s probably been a hindrance to the game.
Epaminondas was the Theban leader who invented the phalanx, which he first used to defeat the Spartans.
Epaminondas was first published in 1975 in a British edition by Philmar Ltd. A year later I published my own edition in America.

 eBROG - Ancients I
Today, Ancients is hotter than Madonna at a photo-op, and every game publisher this side of Nineveh is cranking out something for the spear and sword set.
The game offers a respectable spectrum of different kinds of units at a scale of 500-6000 men per unit: light, heavy, and phalanx infantry, light and heavy archers, "mixed-missile"
Still, the effect works well enough in game terms, and griping about a lack of complexity in a game like this is sort of like getting offended by nudity in Penthouse.

 Game Systems - Part 3
Strictly speaking, an 8x8 game board, such as a chessboard, is not a game system by the stated definition, since it is only one component.
Although some of the games above may sound like tired rearrangements of traditional games, and while they may not be on the same level as some of Sackson's masterpieces, most incorporate fresh mechanics that reveal the hand of a master.
