Epeus is a character in Homer’s Iliad: he makes a brief appearance toward the poem’s end, in Book 23, during the funeral games for Patroclus.
Epeus stands up to lay his hand on the mule, telling the assembled host that somebody else will have to settle for the cup.
He freely admits that he is not much of a soldier, but he claims to be the best boxer around, predicts extravagant suffering for his opponent—"I’ll open his face and crack his ribs," in one translation—and suggests that the opponent’s seconds stay close by to carry out the loser.

They took possession of the gates and guard-posts, Helen lit a beacon to summon back the Greeks waiting at Tenedos, and the Trojans awoke to find their city swarming with armed men.

In addition to memorable ringside reportage and remembrance, The Book of Boxing surveys the pugilistic literature of fight fiction and poetry by such masters as Virgil, O. Henry, James T. With 16 pages of vivid action photography, The Book of Boxing collects the greatest short works boxing has inspired, spanning worlds from that of the ancient Greek warrior Epeus to that of contemporary Angelino Oscar De La Hoya.
And, as an added bonus, the inside of the dust jacket contains the bout-by-bout record of every heavyweight championship fight from 1892 onward.
