Ephat was born in 1950 in a small village in Manicaland, near Zimbabwe's border with Mozambique.
As a child, Ephat was raised and taught to play mbira by his grandfather, Muchatera Mujuru, a medium for perhaps the most important figure in Shona ancestor cosmology, the prophet Chaminuka.
Ephat Mujuru and Dumisani Maraire have taught and performed in the U.S. since the 1980's, and have influenced important American composers, musicians and millions of fans of traditional African music.

Ephat Mujuru was raised in a small village in Manicaland, near the Mozambiquan border, and taught to play the mbira by his grandfather, Muchatera Mujuru.
At his Rhodesian-run Catholic school, young Mujuru's teachers told him that to play mbira was a "sin against God." This irritated Muchatera so much that he withdrew his grandson and sent him to school in an African township outside the capital, Salisbury, present day Harare.
Mujuru played all of Zimbabwe's five types of mbira, but his specialty is the popular mbira dzavadzimu.

Ephat Mujuru was born in Zimbabwe and since his childhood this master Shona musician has been a natural percussionist, playing drums, rock gongs, marimba, dimbwa (bow), and chipendani (mouthbow), in addition to his principle instrument, the mbira.
By the age of fourteen Ephat was performing throughout Zimbabwe, and at nineteen he was the leader of his own mbira ensemble.
Today Ephat Mujuru is based at the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare and performs solo, as well as with his group The Spirit of the People.

Fradreck Mujuru, of the Maungwe Clan, was born 31 October 1955, in Dewedzo, Rusape, Zimbabwe.
Mujuru can now afford to send all his children to school (two of his sons are presently university students) and and also helps many other children in his home village to attend school.
The death of Ephat Mujuru was a blow to Fradreck and he wants to clear the misunderstandings by saying that he did not leave his relative when he passed on.

Traveling to the United States to continue his education at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1982, Mujuru has continued to periodically lecture and teach mbira and marimba at the school.

Ephat Mujuru lurked on the east coast, doing much the same.
Here we find that those differences are not as great as we would have been led to believe, that the spiritual ancestors of each share the same plane, the same history, and those spirits have come together in the studio to inspire a lovely, simple and ultimately powerful recording.
Solo and in duet, with only elemental wood and steel instruments, Maraire and Mujuru have found a bright, warm light and turned it into music.
