In Greek culture the stealing of a man's wife was unforgivable.
Xerxes' forces were unable to break through until a local traitor, Ephialtes, showed the Immortals (the elite Persian footsoldiers) over a mountain pass.
The Persians, able to surround the Greek forces, slaughtered them to a man. Not surprisingly, Ephialtes was not welcomed back in his hometown of Mais.

The traitor, however, was then himself betrayed: upon Ugolino's return to Pisa, Ruggieri incited the public against him (by cleverly exploiting Ugolino's previous "betrayal of the castles") and had the count--along with two sons (Gaddo and Uguiccione) and two grandsons (Anselmo and Brigata)--arrested and imprisoned.
Pretending that the altercation was forgotten, Alberigo invited Manfred and his son to a sumptuous banquet; when, at the end of the meal, the host gave the signal ("Bring the fruit!"), armed servants emerged from behind a curtain and slaughtered the guests, much to the delight of Alberigo.

 Treason
Traitor may also mean a person who betrays (or is accused of betraying) their own political party, family, friends, ethnic group, religion, or other group to which they may belong.
Likewise the term "traitor" is used in heated political discussion – typically as a slur against political dissidents, or against officials in power who are perceived as failing to act in the best interest of their constituents.
Several people generally thought of as traitors in the United States, including Jonathan Pollard, the Walker Family, Robert Soblen, and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were not prosecuted for treason, but rather for espionage—possibly because the foreign countries involved (Israel and the USSR) were considered allies of the U.S. at the time the spying took place.

Ephialtes directed all the force of the popular opinion against this venerable senate; and at length, though not openly assisted by Pericles [182], who took no prominent part in the contention, that influential statesman succeeded in crippling its functions and limiting its authority.
An able and daring traitor, named Artabanus [187], but who seems to have been a different personage from that Artabanus whose sagacity had vainly sought to save the armies of Xerxes from the expedition to Greece, entered into a conspiracy against the feeble monarch.
Either at this period, or shortly afterward, Ephialtes, his most vehement enemy, was barbarously murdered--according to Aristotle, a victim to the hatred of the nobles.

Also, with Cimon off to aid the Spartans, Ephialtes and Pericles stripped the council of the Areopagus of most of its powers, a big move for democracy.
Although Cimon was friendly to Sparta, his naval policies and his democratic increase of the power of common Athenians both tended to increase the divide between Sparta and Athens.
In 461, Cimon was ostracized, and Ephialtes was assassinated by anti-democrats.

It was noted by Herodotus that there were two others; Onetes son of Phanagoras of Carystus and Corydallus of Anticyra who were mentioned as possibly consorting with the Persians by making them aware of a goat track which would allow them to surround the Greek warriors.
However, it was Ephialtes who in the utter act of betrayal led Hydarnes and the Immortals through the path which ultimately led to the death of Leonidas, his remaining Spartan warriors and the brave hoplites of Thespiae.
