The party was led by Ephraim Eitam and joined by Yitzhak Levi for a total of two seats in the Knesset.
The split occurred after Eitam was suspended as chairman of the party; it failed to approve his suggestion to unite with National Union in order to form one large right-national, Religious Zionist party.
Eitam and Levi originally named their party "the Religious Zionist" (הציונות הדתית), but due to objections by Mafdal that the name is too broad, a discussion at the party registrar resulted in the party being named as the Connection Party (סיעת התחברות).

Ephraim Eitam was the Minister of Housing and Zvulon Orlev was the Minister of Labor and Welfare.
Because Eitam was the current leader of the Mafdal, and Levy was his predecessor until his 2002 election as party head, the top tier leadership of the party is therefore currently leaving, and left behind was the pragmatic arm led by Orlev that suffered in recent polls.

In terms of the distance between the average self-labeling of the public and its perception of the location of the main political leaders, the ones closest to the average labeling of the public are Ben-Eliezer and, slightly behind him, Ariel Sharon.
Regarding the leaders of the right in general (Effi Eitam, Benjamin Netanyahu, Sharon) on the one hand and the leaders of the left (Sarid, Mitzna, Ramon, and Ben-Eliezer) on the other, the right wing group's distance from the average location of the public is smaller than the left wing group's distance from that average.
As expected, the extremes are represented by Eitam (an average of 1.90) on the right and Sarid (an average of 9.21) on the left.
