Williams was established in 1793 with funds from the estate of Ephraim Williams as a men's college, located in the Berkshires in northwestern Massachusetts, at the foot of Mount Greylock.
Williams was the first American college or university to feature caps and gowns at commencement ceremonies, in order to eliminate the differences in apparel between rich and poor students.
Williams is currently engaged in one of the largest capital campaigns ever undertaken by a liberal arts college, with a goal of raising $400 million by 2007.

His paternal great-grandfather, Thomas Williams, M.D. (his grandfather being William Stoddard Williams), was the brother of Colonel Ephraim Williams, the founder of Williams College.
Williams was prepared for college in part at the Deerfield Academy, in part at the private school of Dr. Davis, of Middletown, Connecticut, and he joined our Class in September, 1859, but remained with us only during the Freshman year, being compelled to leave college on account of ill health.
From 1869 to 1871 Captain Williams was professor of Greek and Latin in Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont.

In 1854 the alumni of Williams erected a monument (consisting of a huge boulder) to him near Lake George, on the spot where he fell.
He was a surgeon in the army under Sir William Johnson at Lake George in 1755, and present at the skirmish on 8 September of that year in which his brother, Colonel Ephraim, was killed.
