‘Monte Walsh' sells ideal epic Western | lawrence.com
Tom Selleck returns to the saddle with "Monte Walsh" (7 p.m., TNT), an epic tale of the closing of the frontier that should appeal to fans of the wide-screen Westerns of yore.
But it's the 1890s, and eastern financiers are buying western land and fencing it in, and turning old cowboys into paid ranch hands or worse.
Like lots of Westerns, this very long film is punctuated by many -- arguably too many -- scenes of mundane inaction.

The Silent Westerns   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Though motion pictures are a distinctly twentieth century phenomenon, the silent westerns represent "old myths in new packages"; one critic in 1919 even called them the "modern dime novels." Silent film perpetuates old myths of the West, but it is in many ways a unique medium.
Historically, it overlaps with the decline of the "Old West," so that it is at once an instrument for mythologizing and recording a dying frontier; indeed it often blurs the distinctions between history and myth in the personages of cowboys-turned-actors, outlaws-turned-directors, and western landscapes-turned-movie sets.
Also, the silent film was a vehicle well suited for the transmission of myths to American audiences, many of whom in the earliest days of silent film were recent immigrants.

Speaking recently in an interview in Los Angeles, Duvall reflected on the appeal of the Western.
Besides the chance to work in a much-beloved genre with a star and director who'd already scored big with another Western, Dances with Wolves, Duvall was also interested in the complexity of the character: "He's a hard man, but he's got other sides to him.

Against all cinematic odds, 'The Alamo' is a glorious victory
With no central female characters and little humor, it may suffer the same box-office fate as "Master & Commander." But it's a well-crafted, intelligent, no-nonsense western epic that zips us through the famous siege and the birth of Texas with style, verve and impressive historical accuracy.
This version of the tale is framed by Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid), opening as he receives the news of the Alamo's fall and concluding with his defeat of the Mexican Army and capture of its Gen. Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarria) at the Battle of San Jacinto.
On one hand, he demythifies the character and shows him to be a fraud; on the other, he humanizes and ennobles him, giving him self-doubt but also wisdom and great moral strength.

The first feature film to be photographed and projected in the panoramic three-camera Cinerama process, this epic Western is almost as expansive as the West itself, chronicling a pioneering family's triumphs and tragedies in numerous episodes spanning three generations and a half century of westward movement.
Debbie Reynolds plays a sturdy survivor of many pioneering dangers, and the eventual widow of a gambler (Gregory Peck), who is later reunited with her nephew (George Peppard), a Civil War veteran and cavalryman who heads for San Francisco as the transcontinental railroad is being built.
Many more characters and stories are woven throughout this epic film, which is dramatically uneven but totally engrossing with its stunning vistas and countless outdoor locations in Illinois, Kentucky, South Dakota, Monument Valley in Arizona, California, Colorado, and elsewhere.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Major Dundee at Epinions.com
Despite a running battle between its producer Jerry Bresler and its increasingly truculent director Sam Peckinpah, the 1965 film MAJOR DUNDEE nevertheless remains a hard-hitting Civil War western, an antidote of sorts to the John Ford/John Wayne cavalry films.
Though it is a slightly flawed work (it is more than 40 minutes shorter than Peckinpah wanted it, and for this he virtually disowned the film), enough remains in the acting, the story, and the action to make it well worth while watching.
And when it came to putting a new slant on a tried-and-true genre like the western, few could match Peckinpah.
