Epic Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Epic Comics was a creator-owned imprint of Marvel Comics started in 1982, lasting through the mid-1990s, and being briefly revived on a small scale in the mid-2000s.
Epic was also notable as one of the first American comic publishers to release material originally produced in other countries, such as the Moebius graphic novels Airtight Garage, The Incal and Blueberry, published here in English translation.
Epic's cache dimmed somewhat in the late 1980s and early '90s, partly as a consequence of the new breed of "grim and gritty" stories Epic had helped to pioneer but which had now become a staple of mainstream comics.

COMICON.com: MARVEL EPIC COMICS SUBMISSIONS SUSPENDED
EPIC opened the door for new creators as no initiative at a major publisher had before, by guaranteeing that all over-the-transom submissions would be read, after signing a release.
Epic at least allowed writers to earn notice on the strength of their comic writing, and also provided a potentially larger stage than a five-page story in an anthology comic.
Comics are no different, but whoever creates comics has to have that initial interest in the medium to be even in with a chance of creating anything worthwhile.

As to whether or not writing for Epic would be a conflict of interest, Miller was quick to note that participating in the industry is actually something he's encouraged to do.
"The comic book industry needs to get back to the rich diverse level that it was at thirty, forty, or fifty years ago, and I think that Epic is a big part of that, because you have the ability, with respect to Epic, to be more creative, more experimental, and more wide open," Jemas said.
Quesada said that there are other Epic projects in the pipeline, and Jemas said that he would expect five more projects may come out by the end of the year.

Epic Comics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Epic Comics is a Marvel Comics imprint which specialises in publishing creator owned series, brought into existence in part as a response to the brain-drain Marvel began to suffer thanks to smaller companies offering writers and artists ownership of the characters they thought up.
Epic was launched in 1982, and spent over a decade publishing a wide variety of titles, from superhero to science-fiction to horror.
By the very nature of creator-owned titles, some of the series published by Epic came from and travelled onwards to other publishers.
