  Epic Films
Epics, costume dramas, historical dramas, war film epics, medieval romps, or 'period pictures' are tales that often cover a large expanse of time set against a vast, panoramic backdrop.
Biopic (biographical) films are often less lavish versions of the epic film.
Epics are often called costume dramas, since they emphasize the trappings of a period setting: historical pageantry, costuming and wardrobes, locale, spectacle, decor and a sweeping visual style.

But now the epic is back, and suddenly film stars and famous directors are queuing up to sign on to the film world’s equivalent of a school history trip.
The grand spectacle that these films provided, the supposedly more Christianised society into which they were released, their sense of fun, the appeal and familiarity of their stories and their big named actors all added to the appeal.
Four of the five epics may have contained a romantic angle, but in none of them has it been so central to the plot, or the visuals as in the earlier films.

The Film Journal...Passionate and informed film criticism from an auteurist perspective.
If a film is hugely successful it is unlikely to be so just because of the expensive special effects, but rather because it taps into shared desires and issues, both political and personal, and attempts to resolve them for us (more often than not in such a way that would be impossible in real life).
Whilst the historical epic was not fully reignited until the release of Gladiator in 2000 it is worth skimming over the various films inhabiting the genre in the decade prior to this to examine which conflicts they choose to depict and what their overriding thematic elements are.
With this group of films in particular we have found an ambiguous representation of morality than had been previously seen in the genre; perhaps this is a reaction to the stifling of dialogue with regard to such issues in East versus West political debate in recent times.

Filmed over a span of eight years, with the final installment completed in 2002, the films are based around the development of the male cremaster muscle, which controls testicular contractions in response to external stimuli.
Although the films are loosely based around the cremaster’s development, with each successive film documenting the further differentiation of the sex organs, this is not evident upon first viewing of the series.
Since the conclusion of filming, the Cycle has appeared at numerous film festivals, including a much-hyped engagement at the Guggenheim Museum in New York earlier this year, where the films were screened along with the exhibition of sculpture and photographs used in the series.

“The Illusion of Magnitude”: Adapting the Epic from Film to Television
But in keeping with older epic traditions, film epics are usually heroic tales that merge different forms of the past, “mythic, biblical, folkloric, and quasi- or ‘properly’ historical” (5).
Sobchack argues that the epic lost its “expansiveness” when it was transferred to television in the mini-series format, reduced to a small screen, lower budgets, and the temporal fragmentation caused by advertisements and the mini-series format itself.
The new cycle of mythological epics in the cinema during the 1950s and ’60s had been brought about at least in part as a response to the popularity of television and the subsequent drop at the cinema box office, although increases in leisure time and activities were also factors.

While some may argue that nearly every "big" film released nowadays has not only a big-name star attached but also a flimsy story line held up on a thin platform of computer wizardry, Hollywood is changing its tune if only to stay with a newfound sense of what is chic or "cool."
Starting with 1995's "Braveheart" and continuing with films like "Gladiator," the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and next year's "Gangs of New York," Hollywood seems to have gotten the epic bug.

The first great films of this genre were, of course, the early Hollywood biblical and Roman epics.
Many of these were shot in Italy, and the Italian film business was soon making its own pot-boiling contributions to the peplum.

Epic film delivers on The Promise of stunning visuals, despite shaky CGI start   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
It tells the story of a deadly and tragic circle of love, honor, and revenge that ensnares a ferocious general, a heartless duke, a fast-footed slave, a deadly assassin, and a beautiful princess cursed to lose every man she would ever love.
In a romantic epic like this, it would be remarkably easy to submit to good-guy/bad-guy stereotypes and conclude with an ending that’s satisfying but unambiguous.
Especially since this is supposedly the most expensive film in Chinese history, The Promise’s bland CGI falls inexcusably short compared to Hero’s visuals and beautiful cinematography.
