Epica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band which puts emphasis on the use of operatic elements, also employing death grunts and song passages in the Latin language.
Epica then assembled a choir — made up of six men and six women — and a strings orchestra — three violins, two violas, two cellos and a double bass — to play along with them.
Epica's third album — The Score ~ An Epic Journey — was released in September 2005.

In fact, before the band name was changed to Epica, Mark Jansen’s project was called Sahara Dust, which gives away quite a lot about the personality of this still young man. He loves to travel a lot and all the influences that he encounters somehow find their way into his music.
On that album, I found the grunts to be quite annoying after a while, but I never got that feeling on ‘Consign to Oblivion.” Overall, this song is very powerful, and it basically shows us exactly what Epica stands for as a band.
The album mixes wonderful orchestral parts with harder sounds in a perfect sequence that, in conjunction with elaborated lyrics, results in a perfectly organised trip on a set of concepts that invites to reflection.

 Epica: album reviews and ratings
Epica is a band that is fond of contrasts.
Epica should never rush their sound, but 'Consign To Oblivion' does unfortunately feel a little bit strained, and the result isn’t quite as satisfying as before.
Nevertheless, Epica have far from lost their magic touch and 'Consign To Oblivion' is nothing like a bad album.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by Dutch Gothic metal band Epica called We Will Take You With Us
Epica’s debut album ‘The Phantom Agony’ was released in June 2003 and its entry in the Dutch charts quickly established the band as one of the rising stars of the Dutch metal scene.
Largely as a result of their quick success, the band were invited to perform a partly acoustic session for the ‘2 meter sessies’, a music program on RTL Nederland, which has hosted sessions by numerous bands over the years including names as big as Radiohead and The Counting Crows.
In one sense it is a live album, but it is a live album performed in a studio and without an audience.

While this may not define your own personal vision of a concept album, this is what it is to the group in their own words and I would venture to guess many of their listeners.
Epica is Kamelot's most mature album, with a strong combination of power, agression and melody.
There are the typical Kamelot songs on this album with the orchestrations of Miro giving a certain depth to their power metal, with the wonderful and inspired choruses, all performed by Roy Khan.

Epica just is a band that from the start met with the greats in the "female fronted Gothic Metal" and here this is confirmed once again.
Note: the album will be available in several formats and if you have the right equipment, the SACD is highly recommended, as you get to hear the album in a 5.1 mix.

Epica to date is probably Kamelot’s best work, containing it’s share of hard hitting Power Metal music with awesome ballads and well profound lyrics.
Epica begins with 1:07 second long Prologue which grows into the next track, Center Of The Universe, through strange samples and static that give off a very fairy-like feel to it.
The songs overall structure is a bit weaker then the other tracks on the album, but still manages to create a perfect closure to part one of this two part concept album story line.

Epica’s songs have so far concentrated on the strength of the individual, confidence in personal ability and the need for overcoming imaginary boundaries.
However, the main problem with the album is none of these points, but the embarrassing lack of development that Epica have shown in their songwriting.
Consign To Oblivion should have been an album of eleven great tracks, not merely eleven good tracks, and it really shows that the band should be given the chance to develop their music and experiment.

Talented female singer Mari, who will release an album with her own ‘opera metal’ band Titania in 2003, plays the role of Helena, the love interest of the main character.
Ear catchers of the album are the single “Center Of The Universe”, the aforementioned quite heavy “Descent Of The Archangel”, the very melodic “Lost & Damned” and the Eastern influenced “The Mourning After”.
A very interesting and superb album in short, that will suit to be a terrific New Year present for a lot of you.

EPICA appear to be influenced by THERION (even at a subconscious level) something that is noticeable in two ways: First of all the music, which brings in mind works like “Vovin” and “Deggial” at certain times, and secondly the fascination with “exotic” cultures especially from the Arab and the South American worlds.

Whether this is the case by nature or design, one feels her talents are being underutilized; but then, perhaps Jansen didn't want her monopolizing the proceedings like the aforementioned Floor (although they apparently have no problem objectifying her sensual image on the album's cover).

Kamelot’s sixth album, titled Epica, is a massive power metal album in the vein of the group’s previous works such as Karma.
Musically, Epica features the usual Kamelot combo of fiery guitars, energetic rhythms, and male operatic vocals a la Bruce Dickinson (if his voice were a bit lower).
As far as power metal albums go, Kamelot’s Epica is the best on the market right now and it shows the band's immense technical talent and gift for songwriting.
