 DPRP CD Reviews - 2003 - Volume 28
Because notwithstanding the fact that Jansen was the main creative force behind After Forever and has the same role in Epica, he has been able to reinvent himself, assisted by the talented group of musicians he has gathered around him in his new band.
You could be excused to think at first glance that with his new band Epica, Mark Jansen is merely building further on the foundation he laid with his former band After Forever.
Of course there still are similarities between After Forever and Epica but I do agree with Derk, it is like Mark Jansen reinvented himself.

.: Metal Storm - Epica - Consign To Oblivion - review
In fact, before the band name was changed to Epica, Mark Jansen’s project was called Sahara Dust, which gives away quite a lot about the personality of this still young man. He loves to travel a lot and all the influences that he encounters somehow find their way into his music.
On that album, I found the grunts to be quite annoying after a while, but I never got that feeling on ‘Consign to Oblivion.” Overall, this song is very powerful, and it basically shows us exactly what Epica stands for as a band.
Epica’s second album, Consign to Oblivion, the follow-up to their praised debut album The Phantom Agony has been released.

Metal Invader ( Epica - The Phantom Agony [featured album] ) Review.
Dutch band EPICA is the child of Mark Jansen (known from his previous band AFTER FOREVER) who is surrounded by ex - CASSIOPEIA members Ad Sluijter (guitar) and Jeroen Simons (drums) and by bassist Yves Huts (ex — AXAMENTA).
EPICA appear to be influenced by THERION (even at a subconscious level) something that is noticeable in two ways: First of all the music, which brings in mind works like “Vovin” and “Deggial” at certain times, and secondly the fascination with “exotic” cultures especially from the Arab and the South American worlds.
EPICA are taken up the challenge to create music of a ‘higher’ value that is build upon the combination of what is understood as ‘classical music’ and heavy metal in general.

Whether this is the case by nature or design, one feels her talents are being underutilized; but then, perhaps Jansen didn't want her monopolizing the proceedings like the aforementioned Floor (although they apparently have no problem objectifying her sensual image on the album's cover).

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by Dutch Gothic metal band Epica called We Will Take You With Us
Epica’s debut album ‘The Phantom Agony’ was released in June 2003 and its entry in the Dutch charts quickly established the band as one of the rising stars of the Dutch metal scene.
Largely as a result of their quick success, the band were invited to perform a partly acoustic session for the ‘2 meter sessies’, a music program on RTL Nederland, which has hosted sessions by numerous bands over the years including names as big as Radiohead and The Counting Crows.
This album is the product of those sessions, at which the full band performed 6 tracks from ‘The Phantom Agony’ and a further 3 songs in acoustic format.

Exodus was instrumental in pioneering this style of music and soon became the toast of the Bay Area metal scene, in the process inspiring a host of other groups such as Metallica, Testament, Death Angel and Violence (which Rob Flynn would later leave to form Machine Head).
I believe very few bands can remember the exact date of their foundation, often the beginnings are too confused and the paths from the first idea to the first trial and (God allowing) to the first concert often to rocky and meandering.

Sonic Cathedral Zine - Epica / Consign To Oblivion
Epica should never rush their sound, but Consign To Oblivion does unfortunately feel a little bit strained, and the result isn’t quite as satisfying as before.
Consign To Oblivion should have been an album of eleven great tracks, not merely eleven good tracks, and it really shows that the band should be given the chance to develop their music and experiment.
However, the main problem with the album is none of these points, but the embarrassing lack of development that Epica have shown in their songwriting.

Kamelot are a new band to me. But since I got a chance to listen to their “Epica” album, I found their music appealing.
I saw upon it as a challenge when I joined the band, I wouldn't have been especially happy if we should've continued to make music in that same way, not that I say that the things Thom have done before weren't good, there was just something unfinished about it, a bit unstructured.
It worked just fine in Conception with hired people, but it would've been fine to find one, but then he'd have to keep a certain standard, and also interested in being in the band for a while.
