Epidamnus and Dyrrachium; Albanian, Durresi; Turkish and Slavonic, Drach), a seaport and capital of the sanjak of Durazzo, in the vilayet of lannina, Albania, Turkey.
Epidamnus was founded by a joint colony of Corcyreans and Corinthians towards the close of the 7th century B.C., and from its admirable position and the fertility of the surrounding country soon rose into very considerable importance.
As the name Epidamnus sounded to Roman ears like an evil omen, as though it were derived from the Latin damnum, loss or harm, the alternative name of Dyrrachium, which the city possibly received from the rugged nature of the adjoining sea-coast, came into general use.

Now, as time went on, the city of Epidamnus became great and populous; but falling a prey to factions arising, it is said, from a war with her neighbours the barbarians, she became much enfeebled, and lost a considerable amount of her power.
The fleet was under the command of Aristeus, son of Pellichas, Callicrates, son of Callias, and Timanor, son of Timanthes; the troops under that of Archetimus, son of Eurytimus, and Isarchidas, son of Isarchus.
The same day had seen Epidamnus compelled by its besiegers to capitulate; the conditions being that the foreigners should be sold, and the Corinthians kept as prisoners of war, till their fate should be otherwise decided.

Epidamnus was a colony of Corcyra (itself a colony of Corinth) founded around 625 B. with the help of a leader ( oikistes, or chief settler) from the mother city of Corinth named Phalius.
And this is how, according to Thucydides ( Histories, I,24, sq), Epidamnus became around 435 the cause of a conflict between Corcyra and Corinth in which Athens was dragged and which preluded to the Peloponnesian war.
Unable to find support from Corcyra, the democrats of Epidamnus called upon Corinth, which, worried about the growing power, naval capabilities and lack of consideration for the motherland of its colony, was all too happy to help.

Now although the road as a whole is called the Egnatian Road, the first part of it is called the Road to Candavia (an Illyrian mountain) and passes through Lychnidus,[Now Ochrida] a city, and Pylon, a place on the road which marks the boundary between the Illyrian country and Macedonia.
