The purpose of this research was to study certain aspects of artifact variability during the so-called "Epipaleolithic-Neolithic transition" in the Fayum region of Egypt (Figure 1).
It appears that the Epipaleolithic people may have made more use of this local material; indeed, this material may not have been available to the Neolithic people, since the lake at that time would have covered up the material on that side of the ridge.
However, if the Epipaleolithic peoples were obtaining their materials from the same source as the Neolithic artisans, but carrying out the reduction process at various locations, most of which were not located within my sampling space, the raw material characteristics could look different.

Egypt: History - The Epipaleolithic Period of Egypt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
5,500 BC The Epipaleolithic years are largely a transition between the Paleolithic and the Predynastic time periods in ancient Egypt, a time between the hunter-gatherers of before and the appearance of the true farming of the village-dwelling cultures after 5500 BC.
Before the discoveries at El Kab, it was thought that Paleolithic artifacts, even those dating to the Epipaleolithic, would not be found on the floodplain of the Nile, simply because of the action of the inundation.
There is evidence in these later Epipaleolithic sites of a population explosion around 5500 BC, possibly due to the development of true agriculture as well as animal domestication.

The Epipaleolithic site of Tor al-Tareeq (WHS 1065) was discovered in 1982 by Burton MacDonald's Wadi Hasa Survey in west-central Jordan, surface collected and tested in 1984, and partially excavated in 1992.
The earliest and best represented occupation is an early Epipaleolithic industry, overlain in places by an ephemeral geometric industry identified by a higher incidence of geometric microliths.
This report examines a wide range of archaeological and paleoenvironmental data in order to understand aspects of the regional system of settlement and subsistence of which Tor al-Tareeq was a part.

Knowledge of the Levantine Epipaleolithic period plays a critical role in understanding the transition from nomadic hunter-gatherer foraging groups to sedentary communities on the threshold of agriculture.
In this study, Bar-Oz has clarified many aspects of the relationship between Epipaleolithic foragers and their prey.
The Epipaleolithic foragers all utilized similar hunting methods, as evidenced by culling patterns they used for gazelle and fallow deer.

As part of an interdisciplinary project investigating postglacial human adaptations in Catalonia, Spain, a sequence of Epipaleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age sites has been excavated which provides insight into human exploitation of an upland area of the Llobregat valley.
After 4,000 B.C. significant human impact upon the oak forest is marked by the extension of boxwood, and domestic sheep and goat replace the wild fauna.
The Balma del Gai (8,000 B.C.) demonstrates an evolutionary relationship between the microlaminar and geometric industries of the Epipaleolithic in Mediterranean Spain.

Dear colleagues, I am writing you from Izeh at Khuzestan, where we are sadly witnesses of destroying a large numbers of important Epipaleolithic sites in the Karoun river valley (25 km to southeast of Izeh).
Ab-Niroo Company, which is responsible for building the Karoun III dam, gives us one-month opportunity to survey 50-km long valley of Karoun, which expected to be drowned behind the dam.
Since the start of survey we located 18 Epipaleolithic sites consist of 13 caves, 4 rockshelter and one open air sites.

In some areas, such as the Near East farming was already in use by the end of the Pleistocene and there the Mesolithic is short and poorly defined.
In areas with limited glacial impact, the term epipaleolithic is sometimes preferred.
Regions that experienced greater environmental effects as the last ice age ended have a much more apparent Mesolithic era, lasting millennia.

During a one-day survey, two members of Center for Paleolithic Research (National Museum of Iran) discovered a large rockshelter site in the eastern edge of Miyan Darband valley, in northwest of Kermanshah.
She adds that Middle Paleolithic artifacts consist of some Levallois flakes, side scrapers and etc. There are also some small bladeletes and few borers that indicate presence of Epipaleolithic occupations in this rockshelter.
According to F. Biglari this Mousterian assemblage is the first known evidence of Middle Paleolithic occupations in the Miyan Darband valley.

The strontium:calcium ratios of the human samples are over 90% that of the strontium:calcium ratios in their respective faunal samples (Fig.
The large increase in this ratio between the early Epipaleolithic level site (Kebara C) and the two late Epipaleolithic level sites (Kebara B and el-Wad) suggests that the major dietary shift occurred some 15,000 years after the major morphological shift had been completed.
Both the results of the trace element analysis and the archeological record, therefore, indicate that the change in subsistence activities related to dietary components occurred long after the change in skeletal robustness from archaic to modern Homo sapiens.

Paleolithic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Paleolithic (or Palaeolithic) period is the oldest part of the stone age, dating from the first use of stone tools by hominids (maybe 2,000,000 years ago) to the end of the Pleistocene epoch.
Subdivisions of the Paleolithic include Lower Paleolithic[?], Upper Paleolithic[?] and Epipaleolithic.
However it has become common for archaeologists, at least for regions of world such as the Middle East and Anatolia, to discard the Mesolithic term and extend the Epipaleolithic up to the Neolithic.
