		We will investigate the relation between the introduction of simulation as a technological and epistemic innovation within the humanities and changing conceptions of scholarship within contemporary society.
		By using a three-tiered approach we plan to combine material and discursive analysis, ethnographic research, and a wider literature and bibliographic study in order to both examine specific cases of visual simulation use in archaeology and to contextualize our insights in terms of the changing conditions of scholarship in the humanities as a whole.
		By focusing on the epistemic role of simulations we will also contribute to further development in understanding the role of tools and instrumentation in the humanities from the point of view of STS, which so far has mainly concentrated on natural science fields.
