Epitaph Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Epitaph Records is a Hollywood, California based record label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.
Most of the bands on Epitaph are punk rock and punk groups, but several sub-labels exist, such as ANTI-, Fat Possum Records, Burning Heart Records and Hellcat Records that have signed other types of bands.
Recently in 2003, Epitaph has sparked some controversy among its fans by signing noted alternative rap artists Atmosphere and Sage Francis and noise/grindcore band The Locust, leading to many heated debates about what constituted the true nature of "punk" music, but so far the new groups seem to feel at home on the label.

Unlike major labels, Epitaph is not participating in the IBM/Real Networks' Electronic Music Management System (EMMS) trials, code-named the Madison Project, which has 1,000 homes in San Diego wired with high-speed modems and CD recorders with access to major label music.
Emusic is the natural partner for Epitaph; independent artists (like Frank Black and George Clinton) have flocked to Emusic to sell their music online as an alternative to the record industry e-commerce juggernaut.
For Epitaph, this is a relatively late entry into the world of online music sales, but the label has been actively experimenting with its Web site (www.epitaph.com) for many months.

There are a few songs that have some memorable lines, and a few that are just so fun that you won't give a damn, but overall the writing is weak and shows a lack of effort on the band's part.

Epitaph Records was founded by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, with the simple idea of making an artist-friendly label from a musicians point of view.
Through success, perseverance and commitment to their ideals, Epitaph has transcended its humble roots and become home to such diverse and rising modern bands as Motion City Soundtrack, Atmosphere, Matchbook Romance, The Hives, From First To Last, Refused, Converge, The Weakerthans, The Matches, Sage Francis and many more.
Along the way Epitaph has launched two very successful sister labels: Hellcat Records, specializing in Punk, Psychobilly & Ska, home of Dropkick Murphys, Tiger Army, Horrorpops among many others, and Anti-, representing such distinguished artists as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Elliott Smith, Neko Case and Jolie Holland.

Brett started the now ever popular Epitaph Records to release the band’s albums on after all the major labels at the time refused to sign them or anything else that had an ounce of punk.
Their third release was not widely well accepted by the majority of their fans and this caused the band to separate between 1983 and 1987.
They then recorded Generator and just a year later released Recipe for Hate, which was re-released on major label, Atlantic Records in 1993.

Since the early 70's, opening for bizarre recording artists like Frank Zappa, Waits has made music which purposely does the exact opposite of everything else in the industry.
On his new album, "Real Gone," Waits stays true to his rebel philosophy - this time ditching the piano for the first time in twenty years in exchange for every other instrument ever created.
The entire album sounds like it was recorded on a beat up old phonograph.
