  Palaeos Vertebrates 450.100 Eutheria
Note: At the moment, we do not use Placentalia (the crown group of all living eutherians), since we have no idea where to put it.
Note: At this time, the relationships and characters of the Asioryctitheria and Leptictida are sufficiently unclear that we defer any attempt to characterize them.
Note: This may be the stem lineage of the Pholidota.

MESOZOIC MAMMALS; Basal Eutheria Two, an internet directory
For those of a tidy-minded nature, Epitheria McKenna, 1975 is given as a magnaorder, and includes ourselves and most existing placentals.
Exceptions seem to be the members of Xenarthra; anteaters, sloths and armadillos, whose origins are somewhat mysterious, (with thanks to The Ohio Mammals Homepage).
Whilst the remaining genus may well be within Epitheria, the rest of the proposed family have left.

MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The application of probabilistic phylogenetic methods testing for the position of the root of the placental tree —upon which the place of Xenarthra is directly dependant— identified three almost equally likely hypotheses: a basal Afrotheria, an Afrotheria + Xenarthra clade or a basal Xenarthra (Epitheria hypothesis).
If the classical Epitheria hypothesis appeared as less likely, we are left with to alternative hypotheses for the rooting of the placental tree and thus the position of Xenarthra should still be considered as uncertain (
The molecular dating of the xenarthran diversification allowed the test of different biogeographic hypotheses.
