Epona - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Gaulish and (later) Roman and Gallo-Roman mythology, Epona was the goddess of horses, donkeys, mules.
She was particularly a goddess of fertility, as shown by her attributes of a patera, cornucopia, and the presence of foals in some sculptures (Reinach, 1895).
Epona is mentioned in The Golden Ass by Apuleius and the Satires by Juvenal.

Epona is the only Gallo-Celtic goddess, that made her way into the Roman empire-pantheon, where she was highly worshipped - especially as the protectress of horses and foals.
Epona is the protectress of horses, animals, riders and stables.
Epona shrines may also have been common in Roman stables: Lucius Apuleius (c123-180), the author of The Golden Ass, describes one such shrine: I noticed a little shrine of the Goddess Epona, standing in a niche of the post that supported the main beam of the stable.

 Concerning the Order of Epona
Epona clerics are also known as the veterinarians of the pantheon, and most will hire on as caretakers for organizations that house large numbers of animals--farms and ranches, for the most part, though in some areas they will be hired as herdmasters for certain nomadic populations.
Epona clerics are usually considered too valuable to be truly censored for unfortunate romantic entanglements in their community, but more than one cleric has had to depart for another country under the cover of night.
Most Epona churches are small, with no more than ten or fifteen clerics permanently assigned to the church, and most churches most serve as a sort of home base for those clerics who are on rotation in their region.

Epona is the name of the ancient horse goddess of the pagan Gallic peoples and whose name and worship spread throughout the Celtic and Roman worlds.
Despite the loss of the Gallic kings to the Roman invasion Epona's worship flourished as she was adopted by the cavalry legions and spread throughout the empire.
With the decline of the Roman empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Europe the worship of Epona both declined under the dead hand of the bishops and princes but was also absorbed and transformed within the imported religion.
