The Tendring District was formed by the amalgamation of the Borough of Harwich, the Brightlingsea Urban District, the Clacton Urban District, the Frinton and Walton Urban District and the Tendring Rural District.

Buckhurst Hill lies in the southwest of the district across the Roding from Chigwell and is largely residential in character.
Epping landmarks include the great Gothic water tower of 1872 and the parish church, St. Johns, which was built in 1889 and provided with its tower in 1908.
Roydon is one of the largest villages in the District and is served by a station on the mainline between Cambridge and London.

District councillors voted unanimously to reject outline plans from current owner Epping Ongar Railway for 20-plus properties on green belt land off Station Road, North Weald, and about 30 retirement homes for the over-55s at Ongar Station.
A district council report said the transfer of the railway to the county council was "sufficient planning gain to set aside any shortcomings which may be inherent in both submissions".
Epping Ongar Railway said both sites were previously developed land, there was a need for retirement homes in Ongar and the proposals would leave adequate land for railway use.

In 1974, Chigwell UDC was merged with Epping UDC, Epping and Ongar RDC, and Waltham Holy Cross UDC to form Epping Forest District Council.
Epping and Waltham Abbey were given Town Councils, but there was a political majority in the 70s and 80s against doing this for Loughton, Chigwell, and Buckhurst Hill.
His design reflected the influence of Epping Forest on the town of Loughton by showing a deer (a pricket - a year-old deer) and oak leaves (oak trees are a major species in the ancient forest), set in a visually attractive framework.

 Chipping Ongar, which gave its name to the hundred and was for long the principal place in it, was an ancient market-town and contained a Norman castle.
The inclusion of Roding Morrell in Ongar hundred possibly originated in the acquisition of the tenancy in chief of the manor of Roding Morrell by the lords of Ongar hundred.

There were were epidemics presenting all the signs of the plague in one or more Essex villages in 1570-71, 1577-80, 1582-5, 1593-4, 1603-10, 1625, 1631 and 1637-40, as well as in the final outbreak of 1665-6.
It was centred on the rural farming district just to the south east of Colchester in the vicinity of Peldon, Abberton and Wivenhoe.
