Equal Rites - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Equal Rites is a comic fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett.
The closest thing to mentions of the book that occur later in the series are in Lords and Ladies, when Granny mentions to Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully of Unseen University that she has been there a few times before and in Maskerade where she surprises Nanny Ogg by revealing that she has stayed at Rosie Palm's.
The French translation continues the theme of the number 8 with the title La Huitième Fille (lit: The Eighth Daughter).

Equal Rites is the third Discworld book, and spies inform me that at least two more are in preparation.
Without being as continuously and unremittingly funny as the first two Discworld episodes, Equal Rites is a pleasant read which steers a wobbly but just successful course between anarchic breakdown (whereby the reader is reduced to waiting glumly for the next joke) and taking its plot too seriously.

Equal Rites is not only fizzy and hilarious, but is also a wonderful story well told...
In "Equal Rites," Terry Pratchett parodies gender stereotyping and discrimination as Esk is confronted with society's view of the differences between witchcraft, a traditionally feminine profession, and wizardry, an exclusively male domain.
Equal Rites is the third Discworld novel, and in it Pratchett begins to reveal just how diverse a place it is. The inept wizard Rincewind is not to be found in these pages, nor are Twoflower the Tourist and his Luggage.

She knows she is at least the equal of her brothers, yet different, and she is teased for that; growing up as a loner, it is not surprising that she is attracted to the 'outsider' role of the witch.
It is useful to consider the struggle that follows in the context of the feminist movement of the late 70s and 80s, when the battle was raging thickest over the issue of equal treatment in professions and office environments.
It never occurs to the wizards that she has a right to be there on equal terms, but it would be equally unthinkable to exclude her altogether.

Whereas gay rights in terms of gay marriage is a movement for a special group of Americans,” said Rep. Artur Davis, Alabama Democrat.
Ironically, as I suggested here about a year and a half ago, one of the reasons many people oppose gay rights is precisely because they see, or fear that that there will be, a parallel with the civil rights movement for fls.
I have long suspected that many Americans oppose equal rights for gays because they have seen earlier demands for equal rights morph into demands for preferences.
