They are called "shelf" equalisers because of the shape of their frequency response when drawn on a graph.
A pair of sweep equalisers is often found on some of the better-quality "portastudio" devices, as it allows a great deal of sonic control for relatively little cost.
In fact a lot of the "smoothness" attributed to valve equalisers, often has little to do with the fact that they have valves in - it is instead due to the fact that the equaliser circuitry is passive rather than active.

 M.Sc. Thesis
The objective of this project is to investigate the alternative employment of recursive filter structures for equalisation of severely distorted channels, motivated by the achievements of conventional non-blind adaptive IIR filters.
An equaliser architecture including a recursive structure is pursued by separating the equaliser into a cascade of a recursive prewhitening filter adapted with second-order statistics (SOS) and a phase equaliser adapted with HOS.
Equalisation performance of the new algorithm is shown to be superior to block adaptive equalisers, even if the latter is implemented with an impractically large number of filter taps.

 EQUALISERS EXPLAINED
An equaliser is a processor which is designed to deliberately alter the tonal quality of audio passing through it.
Such equalisers can only be found on high-end analogue consoles or within dedicated EQ modules, sometimes with the option to switch the outer bands between shelving and peaking modes.
Cheap high-spec digital equalisers are powerful means of tonal adjustment, but it must be remembered that such devices rarely sound as musical as their analogue equivalents — hence the continuing demand by audio professionals for quality analogue equalisers such as those manufactured by Avalon, Focusrite, Millennia, Oram, and many others.

Sound Performance Lab . Qure . in detail
It is generally perceived that equalisers based upon constant-Q designs produce acoustically comparable results, and suffer from limitations in the areas of sound flexibility and musicality.
Equalising with proportional-Q is therefore more intuitive and subjectively musical than with constant-Q equalisers.
Tuning the equaliser is very intuitive because the frequency control law has been designed to match the characteristics of the human hearing system.

The Art of Equalisation (EQ)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
In the early days of audio engineering, equalisation was referred to as a ‘means of correcting the frequency response of a device to prevent it from compromising the sound’.
Graphic equalisers are the more visual of the two, with the volume sliders or knobs used to control the (fixed) frequencies arranged in order from left to right.
On these equalisers, locating or ‘zeroing in on‘ a specific frequency entails adjusting each control in turn until the right one is found.

The attributes of the equaliser are adjustable via the Parameter Window, as summarised in the following table.
The approximate "brick wall" equalisation is applied by dividing the FFT spectrum into 8 equal frequency bands, then multiplying the values in all FFT bins within each band by the gain for that band.

Synopsis - Equalisers & EQ - audioEd Resources Site Learning Module
Equalisers, in their simplest domestic guise, are the familiar home stereo tone controls - simple circuits designed to balance sounds in the frequency domain.
In the recording environment, a different type of professional equaliser allows the engineer to "EQ the sound" by controlling the tonal balance of sounds as they are being recorded or mixed.
This module examines the different equaliser types used by the sound production industry and provides an insight into their practical applications.

These "Net Equalisers" appear to be normal users on the surface; some run their own Talker systems, some are sysops, others are merely hackers who use the Internet in their spare time.
One example of the Net Equalisers' actions is in the case of a janitor at an American university.
Normally this would have been ignored -- the Equalisers are not concerned with enforcing their views on what is essentially the private pursuits of consenting adults -- and the sysop would have been left to his own devices.

The present invention provides a method whereby an adaptive equaliser is applied to the terminal (mobile) receivers in a cellular radio CDMA system whose purpose is to minimise the mutual interference between users sharing the same radio channel.
Current proposals are to use a common front-end equaliser for the terminals which re-whitens the channel impulse response and remove this mutual interference.
The digital processing load of a receiver equaliser has two parts: firstly the low-level digital filtering function work load at the chip rate and secondly the work load of the high-level real-time filter design algorithm which typically involves matrix manipulations which incur a heavy memory and instruction count.

 FIRST AMONG EQUALISERS?
Applying excessive boost at one frequency may well cause the equaliser to run out of headroom and clip if the input signal level is high, but it can be useful to apply severe cut to reduce the effect of buzz, hum or other fixed frequency interference.
While I wouldn't say a parametric equaliser is an essential studio accessory if you already have a desk with two sweep mids and possibly a spare graphic, it is still without doubt the most flexible and most powerful type of equaliser available.

The low shelving equaliser is used to boost or cut the bass frequencies.
The high shelving equaliser works on the same principle as the low shelving equaliser, the only difference is that the DC gain stays constant and the high frequency gain varies.
This means that if two parametric equalisers has the same centre frequency and Q-factor, a boost by the one can be totally cancelled out by the same amount of cut by the other one.

 The Art of Equalisation (EQ)
On parametric equalisers, the frequency controllers (knobs - no sliders on para’s) are far more versatile, and on good quality desks you’ll find in addition to the level knob, a frequency knob and a bandwidth or ‘Q’ knob.
It is most common to find a ‘sweepable’ mid-frequency control in any of the possible configurations, so in a 3-band equaliser, the middle one is most likely to have a sweep and/or Q control associated with it.
When working with parametric and sweep equalisers — whether you wish to cut or boost frequencies — it is best to turn the boost control to maximum and then comb (sweep) through the frequency range until you highlight the particular sound you wish to modify.

 URS N, A & S Series
Specifically, the centre or corner frequencies for these equalisers are stepped, rather than continuously variable, and the peaking EQ bands are not truly parametric: control over bandwidth (Q) is limited to a simple wide/narrow option in the N Series and is entirely absent from the A Series.
In a world where so many digital equalisers sound cold and sterile, the warmth and colour of the A and N Series designs is a breath of fresh air, whilst S Series has all the smoothness and precision you could want.
The DSP loads vary, but are low enough that you can afford to make these your default channel equalisers — you can load several URS EQ plug-ins even on a single Mix card DSP — yet their support for the Multishell architecture means you're not wasting a DSP chip by only using one instance.

Since the SRQ-2031/4015 are digital, they are inherently free from the added noise and artefacts common among analog graphic equalisers.
One of the primary advantages of using a digital graphic equaliser is the ability to instantly recall all EQ settings at the touch of a button.

ICTs, according to Dr Gatt, are the social equalisers of the 21st century society – holding the power to bridge time-honoured economic, social, political and democratic gaps, unthinkable by traditional ways and means.
Our policy in this respect is to customise the programmes developed in the other three elements and mould them together into initiatives that will positively impact the inclusion and the take-up of the information society by these divide-prone groups.
This Government considers ICTs to be the social equalisers of the 21st century society.

Dear categorists, I wonder whether the following result is known: Call an equaliser in a category C *absolute* if it is preserved by all functors.
Proposition: An equaliser e:A->B, u,v:B->C is absolute if and only if there are maps p:B->A, h1,h2,...hn:C->B such that pe=id, ep=h1 u h1 u = h2 v h2 u = h3 v...
hn v = id Proof: An equaliser endowed with such maps is obviously preserved by any functor since whenever we have maps e,u,v,p,h1...hn such that ue=ve together with the equations listed above then e equalises u and v.

Channel equalisers are used in digital communication receivers to mitigate the effects of inter symbol interference (ISI) and inter user interference in the form of co-channel interference (CCI) and adjacent channel interference (ACI) in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN).
An equaliser uses a large part of the computations involved in the receiver.
Linear equalisers based on adaptive filtering techniques have long been used for this application.
