Equant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Equant (or Punctum aequans) is a mathematical concept developed by Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD to account for the observed motion of heavenly bodies.
The equant point is placed so that it is on a line with the Earth and the center of the deferent, indicated in the diagram by an X. A planet or the center of an epicycle (a smaller circle carrying the planet) was conceived to move with a uniform speed with respect to the equant.
Noted critics of the equant include the Persian astronomer Nasir al-Din Tusi, who developed the Tusi-couple as an alternative explanation, and Nicolaus Copernicus.

Equant's VoIP VPN Sets the Pace for VoIP in the WAN - TechUpdate - ZDNet
Equant launched an MPLS-based class of service VoIP solution in 2000 (the HP-built service was launched in January 2002), so its has had 4 years to refine its service offering, incorporate additional capabilities, and expand its portfolio.
Further, Equant does not have the legacy voice assets of traditional wireline carriers (it has a few circuit switches, but not of the same scale and proportion as the top U.S. carriers), so it has been able to move quickly and with little risk to existing revenues.
Equant is in the best position today, particularly if you have many international locations, but the capabilities will be replicated by most carriers (some companies call their services IP Centrex, so don’t be confused; they’re the same thing as VoIP VPNs).

 The Fallacy of the Equant
The equant model (right) has two "centers," a center of motion (the equant, top) around which the planet traverses equal angles in equal times, and a center of orbit (center), from which the planet maintains a constant distance, while seen by the observer (at the Sun for Copernicus, the Earth for Ptolemy).
By drawing lines from the equant corresponding to the times of the 12 oppositions, and comparing the hypothesized location of Mars with that actually observed, Kepler finds the error of his model to be within the limits of observation.
When drawing lines from the equant at angles determined by the times of opposition, Kepler finds a gap: This model is about 8 minutes of arc off for the opposition of 1582, a crack seen not passively by the senses, but actively, creatively experienced by the mind.
