  Equestrian Sports
Today's major equestrian sports have developed principally from the 17th and 18th-century activities of academic horsemanship, the fox hunt and the steeplechase, although the use of horses in competitions dates back at least to the ancient OLYMPIC GAMES.
Women have long been active in equestrian competition, but were not admitted to the Olympics until 1952 in dressage, until 1956 in jumping and until 1964 in the 3-day event; equestrian sports is one of the few Olympic activities where women and men compete in the same events.
Equestrian sport in Canada is controlled by Equine Canada, formed in 1977 from the National Equestrian Federation of Canada (sport) and the Canadian Horse Council (industry), and formerly called the Canadian Equestrian Federation until 2002.
