2002 Equilibrium - Movie reviews, trailers, clips and stills
Kurt Wimmer's EQUILIBRIUM may leave its scenery thoroughly chewed, but it clearly has a message in mind: Senses are good, and government intervention to stop them, even in the name of war prevention, isn't.
A blend of MINORITY REPORT and 1984, it is told with a sleek, über-MATRIX flair with AMERICAN PSYCHO's Christian Bale cast in the Tom Cruise/Keanu Reeves role as Cleric John Preston.
Although it looks briefly like their relationship will become central to the story, the movie ends up revolving completely around Bale's character, which turns out to be a good thing.

Equilibrium is a 2002 action/science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer.
Several images from Brave New World are used in Equilibrium, in particular the letter T. In Brave New World, the Christian cross has been replaced with the similarly-shaped letter T, a reference to the Model T car designed by Henry Ford, and its image is everywhere.
Equilibrium pays homage to this - the windows of DuPont's office and those of government buildings are T-shaped, and the flag of Libria (similar to those of the Khmer Rouge, Nazi Germany, and the Jerusalem cross), features four letter T's in a ring, as do the muzzle flashes from the guns.

The specific gun style used in Equilibrium is called "Gun-Kata," which relies on the principle that gun fire is not a random spread of projectiles, but a statistically predicable pattern that, when studied properly, forms patterns that, while not totally predicable, allow experts to avoid lethal fire and increase accuracy.
Equilibrium is not a perfect movie and endless nitpicking can undermine the thoughtful message that it is trying to deliver, but the same can be said of practically any sci-fi film.

I love this movie, not only was it great concept, Kung Fu with hand guns F*ckin Brilliant, but it had great acting, the lead was incredible, his slight smile at the end was great, excellent twists, and a truly unique political message.
Found out why it was never released here in America, it was a movie with a smaller budget than the movies that were coming out so the movie company did not want to put it on the same playing field thinking it was going to loose money.

Pistol whipping is a well known cliché in American popular culture and in particular film noir.
It was prominently featured in the film Equilibrium as a component of the fictional martial art of Gun Kata.
Contrary to fictional portrayals, there is no clear boundary between the force needed to render someone unconscious and the force needed to kill them, and all such blows to the head must be regarded as potentially fatal.

The government that is instituted is a totalitarian one, under the iron thumb of someone called the "Father," who has outlawed any form of emotion in a way to prevent war and violence.
The result is an uneven experience, because we like the themes presented, but they are conceived in such a simplistic way that the film has little credibility as a possible vision of what an actual future might be like.
EQUILIBRIUM might be entertaining if you've never heard of 1984, Fahrenheit 451, or any of the other films which might dip from the same thematic sci-fi pool for inspiration.

However, production of 'Equilibrium' was delayed, which resulted in Martin Scorcese snapping up De Caprio for the lead in 'Gangs of New York', so Bale was back on board.
'Equilibrium' is a highly entertaining and subversive sci-fi action thriller, which is best viewed without spending too much time debating whether the dulling of emotion would, in reality, render the characters lifeless and lacking in motivation.
By drawing on previous dystopian themes such as the manipulative paternalism of '1984', the kafkaesque fight against fascism of 'Fahrenheit 451' and the tragic, future-idealism of 'Logan's Run', 'Equilibrium' is a provocative reflection on society which unnervingly demonstrates just how close we really are to medicating ourselves into an emotionally insensate oblivion.

I hesitate to reveal much more about the plot of "Equilibrium", jammed as it is with surprise and invention -- suffice to say, this is an intellectual rollercoaster ride, as cerebral as it is visceral; both a bleak glimpse into a possible future and a stirring tribute to the indomitable human spirit.
True, there are a few minor plot problems, but any movie that treats ideas and symbols seriously these days is a find, and one that pulls off a serious treatment of life's most fundamental questions in the context of a gripping story is a rare jewel.
And the movie looks absolutely awesome: the firefights are great, the choreography is stunning, Kurt Wimmer keeps the pacing so tight that even as the wheels come off the wagon and the seams start showing, you're just so overloaded you don't notice.

And since the movie is weak in pretty much every other respect, it seems like the action was the only thing that could have taken on that burden.
Sure there are many worse movies out there, and Equilibrium is one of the few movies in 2002 to contain *anything* new, but ultimately I can't say that it's terribly successful as a movie.

Movie Review - Equilibrium - eFilmCritic
Movies like these nearly always turn their profits on home video, so maybe the Dimension suits knew what they were doing after all… but still I’m not fully convinced.
Yes, Equilibrium is a barely-veiled pastiche of Brave New World, 1984, The Matrix, Logan’s Run, Farenheit 451 and about a dozen others, but (as Wimmer himself clearly states in his audio commentary) it’s not like the film is denying those influences.
Aside from its varied inspirations, the movie also manges to mark some new territory of its own; Wimmer clearly has a learned passion for science fiction, so it’s clear (to me, at least) that Equilibrium is not some “get rich quick off the ideas of someone else” sort of retread.

Equilibrium is a surprisingly good film and sorely underrated.
Set in a future where emotions are banned, as is anything that may engender emotion such as music and literature, the storyline may conjure thoughts of 1984 or Fahrenheit 451.

Equilibrium is now available on DVD for American audiences, and this is a film I would recommend to White nationalists who enjoy watching the occasional movie.
Equilibrium combines excellent political content, nice cinematography, and some fast-paced action to deliver a wonderful film made on a shoestring budget by today's standards.
With the movie originating out of Europe and not Hollywood, we are also spared much of the anti-White propaganda we are so familiar with: for example there is only one major non-White character and he is not hanging off of a White woman throughout the film.

Here we have a case of a movie that's been out for quite a while now and yet has been ignored by such a large amount of people that it really needs to be given some positive press.
Ok then so I'm not trying to claim that Equilibrium is original because it's not, it's been influenced by everything from Fahrenheit 451 to The Matrix and in no way does it go out of it's way to develop distinction.
It may not have the effects of a movie like The Matrix, but considering the differences in Budget I found the effects in Equilibrium to be a lot more impressive, and well just plain cool.

For Equilibrium, Wimmer has slyly incorporated elements from other science fiction stories, most noticeably George Orwell's 1984, Logan's Run and Fahrenheit 451 to create a riveting tale that captures all the ingredients that make science fiction a fascinating genre.
