  Pteridophyta - LoveToKnow 1911
Though the high specialization of this ancient group of plants renders the determination of their natural affinities difficult, indications are afforded by anatomy and the morphology of the strobilus.
The anatomy of the stem is thus very unlike that characteristic of the Equisetales, and presents essential points of resemblance to the Lycopodiales and especially to the Psilotales.
In the earliest land vegetations of which we have any sufficient record specialized forms of Equisetales, Lycopodiales, Sphenophyllales and Filicales existed, so that we are reduced to hypotheses founded on the careful comparison of the recent and extinct members of these groups.

 Horsetail
Horsetails and scouring-rushes are plants of the genus Equisetum, the only genus in the family Equisetaceae, in the order Equisetales, in the class Sphenopsida, sometimes placed in its own division, Sphenophyta, or in the division Tracheophyta or Archeophyta.
These are plants without leaves, but with hollow, jointed, ascending stems that may or may not have side-branches radiating out from the nodes, depending on species.
Horsetails are considered a difficult weed by many British gardeners, because they tend to reappear after being pulled out of a garden.

Introduction to Equisetum and the Class Sphenopsida
These extinctions left the remaining members of the Equisetales as the only representatives of the Sphenophytina (Stewart and Rothwell, 1993).
Schizoneura's large flat leaves were a distinctive feature of this genus not commonly found in the Equisetales (Scagel et al., 1984).
However, the surviving order Equisetales was widely distributed and diverse during the Mesozoic.

 Mycorrhiza Literature Exchange
Equisetum species appear to be facultatively mycotrophic; the degree of mycotrophy may depend on habitat conditions.
The world-wide warming and change from hydric to mesic conditions, during the late Carboniferous period and thereafter, probably contributed to the demise of the Equisetales.
The demise of the Equisetales was less likely influenced by the, mycotrophic nature of higher plants, ferns, cycads and pines.

Traditional paleobotanical studies recognize five groups of sphenopsids including Hyeniales, Pseudoborniales, Calamitales, Sphenophyllales and Equisetales, but these hypothesized relationships have not been fully tested using cladistic methodology.
Sphenopsids plus cladoxylalean/zygopterid "ferns" resolved as the sister group to lignophytes in an analysis of euphyllophytes by Rothwell (1999), but Equisetum nested among the ferns as the sister to marattialeans in the recent analysis of living plants by Pryer et al.
Whereas Equisetales and Calamitales are widely regarded as closely related, their relationships to Pseudobornia, Hyenia and Sphenophyllum are far less certain.

 What are pteridophytes?
This group includes the Lycopodiales, Sphenophyllales, Psilotales, Pseudoborniales, Equisetales, and Filicales.
The Sphenophyllales and Pseudoborniales occur only as fossils and the Psilotales are confined to tropical and subtropical regions.
The Lycopodiales are commonly called club mosses or ground pines, the Equisetales are called horsetail rushes or scouring rushes, and the Filicales are the common ferns.

The situation is made more complex by the existence of several Devonian fossil plants (such as the Cladoxylales) that appear to be related to these lineages in some way, but whose exact affinities have not been worked out.
Sphenopsids have traditionally been divided into three orders: Pseudoborniales, Sphenophyllales, and Equisetales.
The latter group comprises the archaeocalamites, calamites, and horsetails.
