Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) is the national Australian tertiary entrance score, administered by the AVCC (Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee).
The term ENTER is only used in Victoria, although the actual rank is identical and equivalent to the Universities Admission Index (UAI) used in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, and to the Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) used in South Australia, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Western Australia.
ENTERs are calculated by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) for all students who satisfactorily complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and who meet certain other criteria for receiving an ENTER.

 VCE
ENTER is a nationally agreed ranking based on all people of a comparable age throughout the nation.
Tertiary Entry is largely based on performance in up to 6 sequences of units 3 and 4.
Units 1 and 2 can be completed as single units and Units 3 and 4 must be taken as a sequence.

A university is an institution of higher education and of research, which grants academic degrees.
In the United Kingdom, for instance, a university is instituted by Act of Parliament or Royal Charter; in either case generally with the approval of Privy Council, and only such recognised bodies can award degrees of any kind.

LookSmart's Furl - View Item - Excessive bureaucracy stifles uni flexibility
Regional campuses in Victoria advertise an Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank the equivalent of NSW's Tertiary Entrance Rank or Universities Admission Index in the 50s.
Low ENTERs are associated with social and economic disadvantage, and Year 12 results may not reflect underlying ability.
But the problem is far more serious than just low ENTER scores in some courses.

Introduction of the Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank, an extraordinary representation of year 12 success moderated against results projected from year level testing in the compulsory years, provides support for these privatisation initiatives.
Acceptance of a national curriculum provides a strong argument for the privatisation of public schooling under a federal funding formula based on existing year level performance results.
The use of year level testing from the compulsory years to substantiate ENTER scores represents a substantial step towards the imperative of a national curriculum.

 What about my ENTER?
It compares students nationally within the age group for that particular year, based on their VCE studies.
Your ENTER is the score you receive when you complete VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education).
Extension studies are for students who wish to extend their learning in a particular subject area by completing a first year university subject as part of their Year 12 program.

 about_ter
In Victoria it is called the Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER); in New South Wales and ACT it is the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) and for South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia, the Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER).
A Universities Admission Index (UAI) of 81.00 in NSW and ACT = a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 81.00 in SA, WA and Tasmania= an Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) of 81.00 in Victoria.
This will be the same position as a ranking based on your TES, but the TES is not able to convey this information directly to you.

 International qualifications
Senior secondary school certificates of the Australian States and Territories are usually considered to satisfy the general entrance requirements of UK universities if a tertiary entrance score/rating at a specified level has been achieved.
Entrance points are calculated out of 20 to the nearest 0.5: (A) 20 outstanding achievement, (A) 19 - 17 very high achievement, (B) 16 - 14 high achievement, (C) 13 - 11 competent achievement, (D) 10 - 8 marginal achievement, (E) 7 - 3 low achievement, (non-graded) 2 - 0 requirements not met.
University entrance requirement is most usually linked to the school leaving certificate system in its own State or Territory, but students can apply to universities outside their own region.

The Australian: Public pupils close gap at uni [ 06apr05 ]
The comparison revealed a strong relationship between the Victorian Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) and first-year university performance where the ENTER was above 80.
Ian Dobson, senior research fellow at Monash University's Centre for Population and Urban Research, compared the tertiary entrance scores - which rank students in relation to other students based on their Year 12 results - of a cohort of 12,543 over four years.
As the nation's largest university, and one that offers courses in most fields of education, Monash could be seen as a microcosm of the higher education sector in Australia, and the research findings could be applied across the nation, Dr Dobson said.

In New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory this rank is known as the UAI (University Admissions Index); in Victoria the ENTER (Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank); and in Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania as the TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank).
Selection for university admission is based on a student's Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) which is derived from the TES.
For entrance to university in Australia, all states with the exception of Queensland, work on an overall percentile ranking, calculated in steps of 0.05, reflecting the comparative performance of each successful candidate among the relevant age group in the given year.

Interstate Year 12 students will be ranked according to their TER or UAI, or ENTER equivalent for OP students in Queensland and NZ bursaries students.
This will include an average of all VCE (or equivalent) and tertiary results from within the past ten years.
Tertiary results are generally considered as a more reliable indicator of an applicant's potential to succeed in our courses than an ENTER score, therefore tertiary results are often given more weight.

 bechervaise.com
The ENTER or 'Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank' will be applied to year 12 students in every state except Queensland from 1998 and it is approved by both Federal and State Education ministers.
Establishing an acceptance of national frameworks for education based on agreed outcomes, the joint meetings of state and federal education ministers in the late 1980s formed a watershed for educational provision on a national scale.
If there is a possibility that a student may wish to enter a tertiary institution at some time [any time] after they complete their compulsory schooling then their success seems likely to be influenced by their performance on compulsory year level tests.

CHEAPER, EASIER VCE RESULTS SERVICE FOR 1999
"The new service will enable students to get both their Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) and VCE study scores from the one source, rather than having to contact two separate organisations,'' he said.
The Board of Studies and Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) will combine their annual results and tertiary entrance information services for the first time this year, providing VCE students with a ‘one-stop-shop’ for end of year results.
Students' ENTERs will be read first to reduce the cost for students who only wish to access their tertiary rank.

Ms Kosky said the trend of girls performing better than boys was continuing, partly due to the number of boys who leave to take up apprenticeships and work in the trades.
