A faction of the Gothic nobility pointed out that their own king Witiges, who had just lost, was something of a weakling and they would need a new one.
Eraric, the leader of the group, endorsed Belisarius and the rest of the kingdom agreed, so they offered him their crown.
In 541 the Ostrogoths had elected a new leader Totila; this Goth nationalist and brilliant commander had recaptured all of northern Italy and even driven the Byzantines out of Rome.

When Eraric is deposed (and murdered) by the Gothic army in 541, Totila is not there to succeed him – he’s bought the farm during Belisarius’ arrest of the Gothic leaders earlier that year.
A few shadowy kings may be raised up – and cast down – by Gothic die-hards in the next few years, but the re-conquest of Italy is in effect over.
Eraric was actually one of those who had proposed that Belisarius be given the crown!

Rugians, who had submitted to the rule of Ostrogoth Theodoric, nominated their Eraric as king; but he tried to sell northern Italy to Emperor Justinian and was put to death when Totila became king five months later.
Alexander and Constantian marched with 12,000 men upon Verona while a small band led by the Armenian Artabazes entered the city; but quarrels between commanders delayed the imperial forces, and 5,000 Goths led by Totila won an astonishing victory near Faventia, capturing all the imperial standards.
