Topic: Erastes

  erastes
An erastes was a man of majority age, usually between twenty-one and thirty years of age, who was both the lover and teacher of an adolescent or young adult male, called an eromenos.
In Athens and some other areas, custom forbade the erastes from ever being the passive partner in sex, the theory being that doing so meant he was "less of a man" than the boy he was supposed to be preparing for manhood.
In every case, the erastes was expected to remember that his relationship with his eromenos was intended as a compliment to his married life and not a substitute.

The lover (erastes, plural erastai) was aggressive in pursuit; the younger loved one (eromenos, plural eromenoi) had to be courted with gifts and told in verse how handsome and desirable he was.
The sexual role of the erastes was perceived as active, that of the eromenos as passive.
One might suppose, rightly, that the inequality favored the boy; for while the erastes was a suppliant, the boy was free to respond or not--one of the most common topics of pederastic verse is the arrogant, unresponsive boy.

A potential erastes was normally 20 to 30 years old: contemporary society regarded anyone older than that and still pursuing boys as odd or eccentric, and censured and ridiculed him, but older men did not suffer legal threats or consequences.
Having an erastes brought honor and prestige to an eromenos, and the higher the social status of the erastes, the greater the honor and prestige.
Alternatively, as the erastes did what he did, the eromenos could pray to Aphrodite, the goddess of physical love, thanking her for her gift of physical beauty and gladly considering that he was obliging his duty to her rather than to his erastes.

Dover states that the eromenos was not "supposed" to feel desire for the erastes, as that would be unmanly.

She claims that scenes of pederasty between male citizens in which the erastês offers a money pouch to a younger male ought to be distinguished from citizen encounters with female prostitutes in which we might see a similarly offered pouch (pp.
Pouches are therefore 'symbolic details describing the erastês and his attitude to the erômenos and not the social status of the erômenos' and thus the passive partner is not necessarily a boy prostitute.
The erastês might be too aggressive, the erômenos too keen and the symbolic gift could quickly become a payment for sexual-services-rendered thus transforming erômenos into pornos (as he behaves like a slave) with disastrous political and legal ramifications even if the initial context was an acceptable one.

Alexander's status in Macedonian society would not have allowed him to be anyone's eromenos as the only one who held a higher societal position was his own father, Philip.

In the male homoerotic relationships of ancient Greece, the older male was always the erastes (pursuer) and the younger the eromenos (the pursued), the distinction being only the existence of facial hair (Bing and Cohen, 72).
The erastes actively sought after the eromenos to form a sexual bond, wishing to "penetrate" the younger man. But the beard meant a difference not only in physical roles, but emotional roles as well.
The eromenos was supposed to be desirable to the erastes, which was seen as a compliment and honor, but for the eromenos to feel passion himself was not accepted and considered womanly (Bing and Cohen, 72).

Hence the cultural ideal of a same-sex relationship was between an older man, probably in his 20's or 30's, known as the erastes, and a boy whose beard had not yet begun to grow, the eromenos or paidika.
The erastes had to show that he had nobler interests in the boy, rather than a purely sexual concern.
There is also evidence that penetration was often avoided by having the erastes face his beloved and place his penis between the thighs of the eromenos, which is known as intercrural sex.

Athenian customs are ambiguous; the erastes is both encouraged and hindered in his attempts to conquer his eromenos: the latter is blamed if he surrenders too quickly or for the wrong reasons to the erastes.
Pausanias thinks that this ambiguity is due to the necessity of distinguishing between the lover who desires only the body of the beloved and the lover who, on the contrary, aims at improving the knowledge of the beloved.
