Este itself was taken over in 1275 by Padua and in 1405 (together with Padua) by Venice.

Ercole III (1727-1803) died in exile at Treviso, having refused Napoleonic offers of compensation when Modena was made part of the Napoleonic Cispadane Republic.
In the 18th century Rinaldo d'Este (died in 1737) was twice driven from his city by French invasions, and Francesco III d'Este (1698-1780) built many of Modena's public buildings, but the Este pictures were sold and wound up, many of them, in Dresden.
His only daughter, Maria Beatrice d'Este, married Ferdinand of Austria, son of Maria Theresa, and in 1814 their eldest son, Francis IV, Duke of Modena, received back the estates of the Este.

Emperor Frederic III gave Ercole d'Este the title of duke of Modena and Reggio by a diploma of May 18, 1452 (Lünig, Codex Italiae Diplomaticus, 1725; 1:1639).
A convention was signed on May 11, 1753, and ratified by the Empress, the duke of Modena, and George II of Great Britain as head of the whole house of Guelf (of which Este was a junior branch).
This meant that the Este inheritance had to pass to the next archduke.
