ERCO Ercoupe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ercoupe is a low wing monoplane first manufactured by the ERCO aircraft company shortly before the second World War.
The Aircraft Type Certificate for the Ercoupe passed from ERCO to Forney, then to the city of Carlsbad, New Mexico, then to Alon (which manufactured the aircraft as the Aircoupe), and to Mooney and finally rests with Univair Aircraft Corporation of Colorado.
Early Ercoupes were powered with 65 hp (48 kW) A-65 Continental 4-cylinder engines, with the final versions of the Aircoupe being powered by 90hp Continental C90-16F engines also of 4 cylinders.

 Ercoupe
Several brands of airplanes, including the Ercoupe, were displayed and sold in prestigious department stores.
The backlog of Ercoupe orders was so great that in the early spring of 1946 ERCO established a night shift, doubling production to 20 airplanes per day.
There were usually 100 Ercoupes or more on the field being tested or waiting to be flown away by dealers or owners.

 Some Ercoupe history
The Ercoupe was designed between 1936 and 1940, with the first flight of the prototype in 1937.
Designed by Fred Weick and a small team, the Ercoupe was the first plane to incorporate much of the original research that Weick performed as the assistant chief of the NACA aerodynamics division.
The propeller of the Ercoupe was removed, and to be sure of getting off the ground, they doubled the number of rockets and started the airplane rolling by towing it with a rope attached to a truck.

The Ercoupe 415-C and CD have a maximum gross weight of 1260 lbs and were built from 1940-1947.
The Ercoupe 415-D, E and G have a maximum gross weight of 1400 lbs and were built from 1947-1950.

More than 100 antique Ercoupe aircraft from all over the United States are expected to arrive at the Knoxville Municipal Airport, Jim Bellamy Field for the National Ercoupe Association Convention June 17-20.
Ercoupes normally have 65-100 horsepower engines and get from 19-25 miles per gallon at typical cruise speeds of 100-120 miles per hour.
On Ercoupes produced prior to 1962, pilots even get "convertible." as the side windows slide downwards inside the fuselage allowing for "elbow out the side" open cockpit flying when it's hot in the summer and a person does not mind the breeze.

 Ercoupers FAQ
The FAA even allows a little plaque to be in the cockpit that says as much.  When a coupe stalls, the wing ends up just mushing, but with the ailerons still in control of the plane.  Since it's in coordination, it can't spin.
The Ercoupe can be landed at any speed from just above stall to cruise speed because the gear is designed to make sure the wings are at an negative angle of attack when the gear is on the ground (very different from the tail draggers of its day).
Ercoupes aren't built anymore, but Univair is the Type Certificate holder for the Ercoupe series and thus is the factory for new, Ercoupe, Forney, Alon and M-10 parts.

Our apparently pathetic attempt to explain how we got into the mess made even more 'Coupers upset so, here, from Ed Burkhead, of the Ercoupe Owners Club, is how an Ercoupe really lands in a crosswind: "The key to the Ercoupe gear is the same as the key to virtually all tricycle gear planes.
When Fred Weick decided to sell the Ercoupe with two controls to make flying easier, it was necessary to use a landing gear that could handle crabbed landings.
Ercoupes, like the modern aircraft which copied from them, have steerable nose gear.

There were numerous other unique design features which put the 'coupe years ahead of its time, including the fact that it was the first general aviation airplane to move the third wheel from the rear up to the front, thus creating an airplane with a steerable nosewheel, a feature found on almost all airplanes today.
Since it is impossible to "cross-control" the ailerons and rudder it is impossible to slip the 'coupe, and since it doesn't have flaps some pilots complain that an approach can't be shortened.
