Remnants of the range in the Third Age included the Mountains of Angmar in northern Eriador, as well as the Ered Mithrin and the Iron Hills of northern Wilderland.

Belegost, the ancient northern city of the Ered Luin, was abandoned and its people made the long trek to Khazad-dûm, which in that time required that they cross the Hithaeglir and journey south through the Vales of Anduin to Azanulbizar.
