  Greece - Eretria
Eretria, which lies on the west coast of Eubcea, has a special interest for Americans because it was excavated a few years ago by the American School.
It was not far from Eretria that Dr. Waldstein discovered, in 1891, what was somewhat prematurely heralded by the press as the tomb of Aristotle or some member of his family.
The tradition is, how-ever, that the philosopher was buried at Chalcis, and not at Eretria.

Eretria was listed by Homer as one of the Greek cities which sent ships to the Trojan War.
At the end of the 8th century, however, Eretria and Chalcis fought a prolonged war known (mainly from the account in Thucydides) as the Lelantine War.

In the 8th century BC, Eretria and her near neighbour and rival, Chalcis, were both powerful and prosperous trading cities, and the Eretrians controlled the Aegean islands of Andros, Tenos and Ceos.
Excavations of ancient Eretria began in the 1890s and have been conducted since 1964 by the Greek Archaeological Service (11th Ephorate of Antiquities) in collaboration with the Swiss School of Archaeology, who also established its archaeological museum.

Achaeus of Eretria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Achaeus of Eretria (in Greek Aχαιος; born 484 BC) in Euboea was a Greek playwright author of tragedies and satyr plays, variously said to have written 24, 30, or 44 plays, of which 19 titles are known, some of which include Adrastus, Linus, Cycnus, Eumenides, Philoctetes, Pirithous, Theseus, and Œdipus.
Some classicists suggest that his winning only one prize was due to him not an Athenian by birth, and the men of Athens were loath to honor any but their own fellow-citizens.
Achaeus of Eretria belongs to the classic age, but was not himself a classic, though his satyric plays were much admired for their spirited style, albeit somewhat labored and lacking in clearness.

Eretria (the ancient city lies beneath the modern town) is located on the S edge of the Lelantine plain, on the W coast of Euboea, ca.
The maritime competition and possibly land disputes between Eretria and Chalkis may have caused the Lelantine War, one of the earliest reported conflicts between Greek city-states, which, according to tradition, continued throughout the 8th century B.C. One outcome of the war may have been the establishment of Eretria at its present location.
Eretria then became a member of the Delian League and remained allied to Athens until 411 B.C. In 411 B.C. Eretria joined (or perhaps led) the rest of Euboea in a Spartan inspired revolt from Athens.

In the first part of Eretria XII, Nina Mekacher meticulously presents the moldmade terracotta figurines of the second half of the 4th and the 3rd centuries B.C. that were discovered from 1964 to 1995 in the Swiss excavations of the western quarter of Eretria, south of the theater.
Although the author's aim, to illuminate the nature of the local coroplastic industry, is the same as that of earlier publications of Eretrian material, her presentation is different, in that it emphasizes the technical aspects of the moldmade figurines.

Pierre Ducrey and Stephen Smit of the Swiss Archaeological School of Athens (Greece) announced in March 1998 that they unearthed in Eretria (on the west coast of Euboia island, southeast of the city of Chalkis) a red dye workshop which dates to the 2nd CE century (Roman period).
The red dye industry was a phoenician discovery which was later widely practiced on various cities of the northern Mediterranean coast.
The importance of the discovery lies in the fact that it is now revealed that Eretria prospered even in the roman times since red dyed textiles were in high demand in this era.
