Presumably the Erewash company were also pressured at some point to do the same but the canal was only ever owned by people who's number one interest was in the waterway itself.
The Erewash Canal is now a well used pleasure route which begins at a very popular junction, travels through both urban and rural areas and ends at a basin now used as a marina.
Beside the A609 road bridge, situated to the east of Ilkeston on a right hand bend on the Erewash Canal, is Gallows Inn which was designated the official head of navigation by the BTC in 1962.However, to the north the rest of the route was always maintained and is still completely intact.

Their pressure to have the tunnel re-opened was backed by the Erewash Canal Company and eventually a survey was made by Rudolph de Salis and paid for by the government.

In April 1777 an Act was passed to permit the construction of the Erewash canal from Langley Mill to the river Trent at Long Eaton, and little over a year later it was finished and open for business.
Nottingham collieries looked as though they were going to be at a disadvantage and it seemed that the Erewash pits would flourish at their expense.
The Trent and Mersey and the Erewash Canal Companies had plans of their own for a 'Trent canal' to run from Sawley, across the Erewash, past Beeston, Lenton and on to Nottingham and the Trent.

 Langley Mill
Until the onset of the turnpikes and the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, the area which was to become Langley Mill was simply a crossing place on the River Erewash, with links to Derby, Heanor, Eastwood, Mansfield and Nottingham.
The Erewash Canal in 1779, the Cromford Canal in 1794, and the Nottingham Canal in 1796, all used the valley of the River Erewash, and together brought about the early prosperity of the area through the movement of coal, in order to satisfy the southern hunger of the industrial centres of Nottingham and Leicester.
The Erewash is navigable from here to the Trent and here is a junction with the Cromford, Derby and Nottingham canals.
