Eriador was a large region in northwestern Middle-earth between the Misty Mountains and the Blue Mountains.
Woodlands in Eriador included the Trollshaws between the Hoarwell and Loudwater west of Rivendell, the Old Forest between the Brandywine and the Barrow-downs, and the Chetwood near the village of Bree.
Sauron invaded Eriador in 1695 S.A. Eregion was destroyed in 1697 and Elrond retreated with the remaining Elves and founded the refuge of Rivendell.

Eriador had once been covered with vast forests, but in the SecondAge much of these had been removed by the Númenóreans.
It is also rumoured that in the northern and eastern regions of Eriador there dwelt a remnant of the Easterlings of Beleriand, perhaps the earliest inhabitants of Eriador in the SeA.
Eriador had also been the location of the Noldorin realm of Eregion, and it was here that the Rings of Power were forged by the Gwaith-i-Mírdain and Sauron (in disguise).

[ Daily Tolkien ] The People of Eriador in the later Third Age
Peaceful settlers did enter Eriador in the Third Age: Hobbits from 1050 settled across Arnor, and Dwarves resettled in the Blue Mountains from 2799; but the trend was one of population decline.
In the millennia before the War of the Ring, the surviving people of Eriador faced natural disasters (for example the Long Winter of 2758 and the Fell Winter of 2911) and the threat from evil creatures (trolls, orcs and wolves).
Eriador between the River Lune and the Misty Mountains was less inhabited than most parts of Rohan, Gondor, Harad or Rhun and was desolate in parts.

If there were safe havens scattered across Eriador in the form of small camps where the Elves could stay with relative peace, they might have stopped only once every few days.

Being the first to enter Eriador around the year 1050 of the Third Age, the Harfoots wandered as far as Weathertop, while the Fallohides and the Stoors still lingered on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains.
They were considered the most adventurous among the Hobbits, and although the Fallohides mingled with the other strains after entering Eriador, the hobbits with a strong fallohidish strain in them were often seen as chieftains of other clans of Hobbits by virtue of their leadership qualities.
In the year 1601 of the Third Age the Fallohide brothers, Marcho and Blanco, found the Shire, which was later granted to them by King Argeleb II of Arthedain.

Morgoth used men from Eriador in his later wars in Beleriand; Sauron used men from the White Mountains in his war in Eriador (1693-1701 S.A) and brought men far distances from Harad and Rhun in the War of the Ring.
This is implausible because of the difficulty for families in such a long march over a short period of time (the original migrations of Men westward would have been done gradually, in stages).
The spread of trolls and undead into Rhudaur and the worsening climate of East Eriador probably kept the folk of Angmar hungry for the better lands to the west.

If the relocation of many Hobbits to Rhudaur in the 11th and 12th centuries made it possible for the Kings of Rhudaur to wage almost endless war against Arthedain and Cardolan, then the departure of the Hobbits would have made it almost impossible for later kings to retain their power.
