Eric B. and Rakim were an East Coast hip hop duo that popularized the James Brown-sampled funky hip hop of the late 1980s.
Eric B. is considered to be one of the great DJs and record producers of the late 1980s, while Rakim is widely considered to be one of hip hop's best MCs ever.
Eric Barrier (Eric B.) and William Griffin (Rakim) began recording together in the middle of the decade with "Eric B. Is President" (1986 in music) from Zakia records in Harlem, New York City.

The legendary duo of Eric B. and Rakim filed a lawsuit earlier today (January 14) in New York against Russell Simmons, Lyor Cohen, Island Records, Def Jam Records, Universal Music Enterprises and others for a yet-to-be-determined amount of money, alleging they were never paid royalties from their classic 1987 LP, Paid in Full.
Eric B. and Rakim say they were misrepresented by former managers Simmons and Cohen and that Island has been illegally distributing the album.
Eric B. and Rakim's last album together was 1992's Don't Sweat the Technique.

Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full is definitely a hip-hop classic.
Eric B. displays amazing turntable skills on “Eric B. Is on the Cut” and “Eric B. Is President.” The latter has some electro elements as an added bonus.
The famous “Paid in Full” is also on this album, though the LP version only clocks in at 3:48 and is nowhere near as interesting as Coldcut’s remix, “Seven Minutes of Madness.” Undoubtedly new listeners will find many of Rakim’s vocals familiar, since samples of them have since appeared in numerous tracks by other artists.
