Jack Feeny reviews: Eric B and Rakim
Eric B's DJ style is highly reductive, with the slimmest of samples inserted over the trebly break-beat, but this only seeks to brilliantly highlight the skills of his partner, whose highly verbose and ingenious wordplay is widely credited as being the most influential in the history of hip hop.
Rakim may be the greatest MC to ever lay his rhymes to tape but it is the explosion of sophistication from Eric B that really sets this album apart and exhorts the newly born upstarts to follow their lead.
Eric B and Rakim were the best, they knew it, and the resulting album is a work of art that is brimming with such self-acknowledged greatness that its pleasures are almost pornographic.

 Eric B. & Rakim : iSOUND.COM™
Eric B and Rakim are partly responsible for elevating hip-hop from a guy doing call and response at the party, into a real art involving deep, rapid-fire lyrics that take skill to deliver.
Eric B and Rakim also signified the ideal relationship between a rapper and a DJ -- they worked together as a team and showed that this kind of compilmentary partnership can bring both much further along than if they were simply being "produced" in some studio.
Some of the tracks by Eric B and Rakim are classics due to their impact on hip-hop history, such as "Paid in Full" or "I Know You Got Soul" from their first album.

Rakim's verses on the album's first three tracks ("Follow the Leader," "Microphone Fiend," and "Lyrics of Fury") are the stuff of hip-hop legend, and the subject matter rarely strays from the swaggering, chest-thumping template of these three classics.
Eric B delivers great production which is less dated sounding than his "Paid In Full" work (see "Follow The Leader" for an example) - mainstream rap fans will have a better chance liking this one than their debut.
Rakim is the greatest MC of all time!(my opinion of course) This is one of the dopest Eric B & him ever put together.

Hip-hop was really starting to emerge and Eric B and Rakim had taken the vanguard ushering in a new style of hypnotically seductive beats laced with a smooth intricate rhyme style.
Rakim's lyrics still sound ten times as fresh as 90% of today's rappers, and Eric B's bass and sample heavy grooves are still enough to make my head bob every time.
The entertaining instrumental "Eric B Is on the Cut" follows, preceding the heavy and infamous "My Melody." The thumping drums and bass on this track are excellent, as are Rakim's legendary rap verses.

 NewBeats.com: Eric B. and Rakim
There are two things you notice when listening to Eric B. and Rakim's second album.
Eric B.'s complex, and impossibly tight beats not only still embarrass producers today who think throwing a drum beat over an old sample equals talent, but they give a hard backboard to Rakim's rhyme style.
Rakim's lyrics are clever and intricate, and begin to answer some questions about where Eminem may have picked up part of his style.
