Rita Hayworth was still a young starlet when she made Music in My Heart, yet it's a wonder her fledgling career survived this flimsy B musical.
Meanwhile, the jilted Charles and his devoted valet Griggs (Eric Blore) hatch their own scheme to win back his wayward fiancée.
As is often the case with B films, the supporting cast files the best performances, with George Tobias as Rita's father and the irrepressible Blore trying their hardest to punch up the cliché-ridden story.

One of the finest character actors in Hollywood, Blore enlivened Fred's movies with his stuffy, British butler persona, appearing with Fred no less than five times.
Blore's acting was often like the butler he portrayed: smooth, expert, unobtrusive, a minimum of fuss and absolutely essential.
Either way, it was to Blore that the plot resolutions were entrusted and on Blore that the plot swung.

The three wonderful character actors from "The Gay Divorcee," Edward Everett Horton, Eric Blore, and Erik Rhodes, are joined this time around by Helen Broderick, giving a deft touch to this fun and zany story which was as good an excuse as any for Fred and Ginger to sing and dance the Irving Berlin tunes.
It is Eric Blore this time who steals every scene he's in as Horton's quite odd little manservant, Bates.
In the Top Hat musical number, Fred cleverly uses his gentleman's cane as a "machine gun." And the ever-so-tender cheek to cheek number where he is singing and dancing with Ginger makes me feel like I am dancing in heaven as well.

Henderson argues that retaining this scene would have given the film an added political dimension (it does not appear on the DVD).
Henderson's arguments are valid, but it's still a lovely film, if for no other reason than the presence of Sturges stalwarts William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, and Eric Blore, among many others.
One might hear the argument that it is not one of Sturges's most successful comedies, but one might argue back that Sullivan's Travels, with its excursions through noir, the prison film, and tragedy, is not really a comedy in the first place.
