I AM amazed that Mr Manning is surprised by MP Eric Pickles's comments (Epping and Ongar edition, December 3) on the former's planning application to develop Moreton sand and gravel pit into a caravan site.
When the showmen, who claim to be overcrowded on two acres, plan to move to a space four times as big, it is not surprising that people will expect an influx of more people to fill some of the additional space.
Mr Pickles has been asked by the parish council and the local residents to do whatever he can to assist in preventing this appalling development in the Green Belt in the centre of Moreton.

This new guidance, obtained by the Conservatives, advises that councils should not permit local ward councillors to consider applications from their own ward, under the Human Rights Act, because of a possible 'bias' against pubs and clubs.
Nor will local residents or councils be able to prevent events, such as raves, for up to 500 people, as the guidance does not allow objections to 'temporary event notices'.

BRENTWOOD and Ongar MP Eric Pickles has warned that cuts in the programme of waterways maintenance has played a big part in flooding problems particularly around the River Roding and Cripsey Brook.
He cites last October's floods as a direct result of a reduction in the maintenance programme which covers the two rivers and has raised the question on cuts with the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Nick Brown.
However, Mr Pickles says he has not received a satisfactory answer as Mr Brown claimed the responsibility would lay with local councils, including Epping Forest Council, from April 1 last year.
