 Eric Ravilious
Eric Ravilious, the renowned English painter of the pre-war decade, was killed in 1942 aged 39 while on active service as War Artist with the Royal Air Force, off the coast of Iceland.
Ravilious became established rapidly as a muralist of striking originality; his mural for Morley College (1928-1929), sponsored by Sir Joseph Duveen, achieved prominence.
Ravilious seemed to capture a careless innocence of the period, sustained by modernism as an ethos, and yet altogether something else.

Eric Ravilious (1903 - 1942) worked as a painter and designer producing water-colours, woodcuts, book illustrations, ceramics (notably for Wedgwood), furniture, glassware and murals.
"Eric painted all around the stage with marine subjects, shells, seaweed etc. I know that my father was very pleased with his design, he said that Eric had understood what was wanted and had an architectural sensitivity.
I remember Eric and I had a table to ourselves (we must have seemed fish out of water) and we were greatly amused by our fellow guests.

Merivale Editions | Eric Ravilious, Hull's Mill
Eric Ravilious’s large wood engraving of Hull’s Mill is not completely unknown, but only a few prints of it have ever been made.
He took special delight in the shallow stream that still crosses the road as one approaches the mill – ‘a pleasure to cycle through and it makes such a pleasant gurgling noise.’ In another letter he wrote, ‘It is an extraordinarily attractive place’, and so it remains today.
As well as straightening the road, Ravilious has emphasised the line of telegraph poles, showing his fondness for abstract geometric structure, while the little boat on the dark water, absent from the other renderings of this subject, adds a touch of Schubertian wanderlust.

Eric Ravilious by Alan Powers : Booksamillion.com (0856675679, Hardcover)
The English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was a painter of watercolors and murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving and lithography, and a designer of transfer-ware, pottery and porcelain.
From 1939 until his death he was an "Official War Artist." This book presents a full retrospective of all aspects of his work, culminating in the final phase of his war artist work.
The book positions Ravilious in a European and American context of the period, identifying artists and designers whose work shows similar characteristics to his and require a historical grouping separate from modernism.

Some of the later paintings depict the landscapes in Iceland that Ravilious (1903-1942) admired before his life was tragically cut short in 1942, when he failed to return from an air-sea rescue mission two years after becoming an official war artist.
The most notable of the war paintings are the romanticised dark and foreboding Icelandic landscapes and the remarkable ‘View from the cockpit of a Moth’, which shows Ravilious’ fascination with the view of the earth from the air.
Ravilious’ work diversifies and blossoms in skill and subject matter as the years pass.

 Eric Ravilious: Foreword
This book will surely afford widespread pleasure: Eric Ravilious remains one of the most ardently admired members of a generation marked by its outstanding talent, and Helen Binyon, a fellow-student and initimate friend until the end of his life, was by far the best qualified person to write it.
At the Royal College Ravilious was soon accorded a place among fellow students of exceptional talent, including Henry Moore, Bawden, Albert Houthuesen, John Piper and Percy Horton.
I well remember his expressing his admiration for Ravilious, and this at a time when the college was attended by so considerable a number of students of conspicuous ability.

Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden: 'DESIGN' at the Fry Gallery, Saffron Walden
Living as we do in a period when visually almost 'anything is possible' with the use of digital creation, manipulation and output, we must essentially see Eric Ravilious as a wood engraver and painter who extended his creativity into industrial design.
Both Bawden and Ravilious, who met as students at The Royal College Of Art in the twenties, were steeped in a craft ethic: print making (particularly lino and wood), book illustration and mural painting as well as watercolour landscapes.
Ravilious died tragically young (39) in 1941 during a wartime air-sea rescue mission; Bawden with whom he had lived in Saffron Walden at a house which had become a centre for itinerant artists, survived him by fort-six years.

Design: Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious
Even though Ravilious died in action in World War II, it is arguable, as the book claims, that the particular design ethos that followed 'reached its zenith' with the subsequent Festival of Britain, which gave Bawden the opportunity of useful commissions.
It is also arguable that Bawden and Ravilious, with their crafts orientation, deliberately stood outside the modernist/traditionalist debate.
In retrospect, it could be claimed convincingly that Ravilious quietly and sympathetically embraced the tenets of a modern English culture; he offered more forcefully glimpses of popular culture, later developed by such artists as Edward Burra.
